One of my dogs, a lab mix, is acting strange. He is lethargic, his eyes are sad, and he just isn't acting himself. It isn't parvo; he has been vaccinated, neutered, and is 9 years old. he doesn't have diarrhea and he's not throwing up. What is wrong with him?

If he's 9 years old it could very well be something related to age. Did your dog have the geriatric blood work done by the vet the last time he was in for shots and a check-up? It's a really good idea for dogs over 8 because if anything's starting to go wrong (with his kidneys for example) the blood work will show it and the vet can treat it before it becomes serious.

Any change in temperament like you're describing can often be for a physical reason. You may want to take him to the vet if it keeps up.

I would definitly recommend taking him in to the vet immediatly. If this is not normal behavior then there could be something wrong- and remember that vacinations- while they work a huge amount of the time (almost always) if he is close to needing his booster he could be susceptible to parvo. I don't think that is what he has because he would be having diarrhea or other symptoms.

However he could be having joint pain or issues, he could have a doggie cold that needs medicine, he could have a urinary tract infection or pretty much anything.

You know your dog best. Like you said- he just isn't acting like himself. You also said his eyes are sad. I think he is trying to tell you he does not feel good. Also if he has any unsupervised outside time he could have eaten something that is not helpful. Did he get into the garbage within the last couple of days?

If money is a problem, call your vet and try and get a consult over the phone. Hope your dog is okay. I know how hard it is to see your friend not feeling like himself.

Actually your dog is old. There could be other things wrong with him. His problems could be physical pain -- joint pain. I can't remember if a dog age is 7 or 11, so he is 63 or 99. I'd advise taking him to the vet. How is his diet? Is he eating the foods he likes? Is he eating grass? There is most definitely something else going on with him other than the usual dog issues we know they can have. Our pets can develop cancers, lukemia (a friend of mine had a cat that she put down because of this), and a plethora of other diseases that we humans don't even think they can develop. I hope he gets better soon. Take him to the vet so you and him can have your worries gone.

Do you have your dog on any kind of heart worm prevention?
A dog can contract heart worm disease and be virtually symptom free for at least 7 months. Usually the first sign of having this disease is lethargy, weakness, and just not acting right. A cough and exercise intolerance are also symptoms. Also, labs are known to eat almost anything, he could have an intestinal blockage from eating a foreign object. My advice would be to take him to your vet ASAP.

Assuming he hasn't been exposed to any poison like anti-freeze. At his age he may be in in pain from arthritis or some other internal disease.
