Well, we can't just kill all the prisoners.

Prisons are sort of a necessary evil, I suppose.

Lots of good answers. Steve B, the whole point of spending money on programs for the inmates is so that 90% that gets out can learn to stay out. Without some sort of help, they do come back into the system. We're trying to reduce that.

Also, inmates do NOT, however many times you hear it on tv, have more rights than everyone else. Their rights have been highly restricted: they have no reasonable expectation of privacy; they are subject to search at all times, with no suspicion needed; they are subject to drug testing at any time; they cannot choose where to live, nor with whom; they cannot choose their job, nor working hours; they cannot choose what to eat, when to eat, nor where to eat; etc, etc, etc.

And, your taxes do NOT pay for their tv. That comes out of inmate funds, from profits from the inmate store. At least, that's the way it works in Georgia.

Incidentally, assaulting an Officer in the performance of their duties carries a penalty of not less than 5 nor more than 25 years in prison. Quite stiff, in my opinion.

I'm not sure where you want to go with this. Most criminals did not commit offenses worthy of the death penalty so what do you suggest. They are still convicted of a crime, some violent, and need to be removed from society. The system isn't perfect but about the best most countries have arrived at.

(answer above) hate to tell you this but 90% only re-enter society for a bit. most inmate are repeat offenders who come and go many times. i don't have a problem paying for food, and housing, what i have a problem with is that they end up having more rights that people in general including the officers that have to watch them. ya, they can't get out for a while or vote, but the rights they have in the facility are amazing. i don't think i should have to pay for cable, and i think the charge for assualting the corrections officers and the civilian staff should be alot higher than it is. most of our inmates it becomes a joke because they leave and a week later they are back on the same charge. sad. really sad.

First off over 90% of all prisonsers eventually re-enter society so I think we should spend a good portion of money to do what we can to rehabilitate them.

Secondly, evem if you are deprived of your freedom due to the consequnces of your actions, you still have human rights and rights as a US citizen. If we want them locked up, it's a small price to pay to provide them with the basic necessities of life.

Thirdly, if you are even a little religious, I think the bible says quite a bit about caring for prisoners.

I guess that depends. One one hand most of them will enter back to society at some point, although approximately 50% of them will serve time again (again and again) So a lot of them have previously or will someday pay taxes. On the other hand for every offender that I put up with and then come back into the system (time and time again) I guess to me that is job security. So I guess it is really how you choose to look at things.

Yes, I realize it costs an average of $55,000 a year per prisoner to be kept in a concrete cell. I also realize how many millions of dollars and man hours our appellate system costs, not to mention investigation of the case and the trial.

I think it sucks that I have to help pay for their meals/housing/etc., but what can I do? If I don't pay my taxes, they'll put me in jail, and I'll want to be fed and clothed, too.
