If price doesn't matter, get a Nikon D200 and a good lens and use it in "P mode while you learn more about photography. If that's too steep for your budget or your learning curve, get a Nikon D50. It has a few "consumer friendly" automatic modes, but still offers total photographic control when you are ready to take charge. The D80 is out now at about $1,000, if you can find it, and that looks like it would be a good choice, too.

Get a "decent" lens, such as their Nikkor AF-S 18-70 f/3.5-4.5G ED DX lens and not the "kit" lens. This pair (D50 and this lens) will cost you less than $1,000 and you will be very happy with it. If you want more lenses for the same money, you can get this camera with two "kit" lenses that are decent, but not as good for the long haul as the one I mentioned. When you are ready to add lenses, the sky is the limit with Nikon.

If you CAN afford more lens, get the 18-200 VR lens. It will cover quite a bit of territory, so to speak, and you will find you are well-equipped for most jobs you will be shooting.

If I had to specify an ideal setup for an "amateur" photojournalist who has aspirations of moving on up in the profession, I would recommend the Nikon D200 and the 18-200 VR lens. You would also like to have the SB-800 flash for indoor jobs. The only thing wrong with this recommendation is that it will cost you over $3,000 to get it. One thing is for sure, though, your equipment will NOT hold you back!

Get a 1 GB memory card, such as the Sandisk "Ultra" for decent write speed. You can get these in the $30 range. An "Extreme" is faster, but I doubt anyone would notice the difference except a pro.

You will want a DSLR, because you will have to "motor drive" many events to get just the right shot. DSLR's can do this in continuous mode while still having high resolution. You will want a reliable camera and you will want to have access to a full ine of lenses if you make it in photojournalism. Nikon offers both.

Someone else wil undoubtedly recommend a similar Canon camera and I will not dispute that choice. I know Nikons and someone else knows Canons. Both are excellent cameras and you will never outgrow their system offerings.

If you decide on buying a DSLR you also have to consider future products as well. Lens can be expensive at times more than the camera itself. So if you buy a canon and you want a better camera but now you have all these canon lens that cost you an arm and a leg, well you can buy another canon product and still use those lenses. The Canon Digital Rebel XT is a very good choice, but honestly if you are thinking of spending $1000 of you hard earned cash I would do substantial research. Below is a link of two of the most popular camers for starters. Ultimately it comes down to what you plan to do with them.

Canon, Nikon, and Pentax just came out with some great new cameras. Check out the Canon Digital Rebel XTi, the Nikon D80, and the Pentax K10D. All of them are 10 megapixels and have big LCD screens.
