I have found that the best way to help someone to be responsible with money is to show them what life is like without the constant flow of cash. Cut down on the allowance and show them tactics on how to budget responsibly. Hey, it worked for me and I'm 16!

Emancipation laws vary by state and not all states have an emancipation statute, which doesn’t mean that you can’t petition for it, because you can pretty ask the court for whatever you want, but in those states there is no actual ‘procedure’ in place. You need to check the laws of your state. At a minimum you would be required to prove that you are capable of fully supporting yourself--paying for rent/utilities/food/medical expenses/etc with no assistance from anyone. You would also have to provide a *valid* reason that emancipation would be in your best interest. The court could require other things as well. The court can deny emancipation for any reason that it sees fit, including, but not limited to, their belief that you lack the maturity/ability to function as an adult. Generally speaking, it is not a quick or easy process, and more often than not, it is denied.

Make them get a job. If they can't, then give them an allowance and only give it to them if they do their chores. Treat the chores as a job.

Make them pay for all the extra's they want. Once they see how expensive things are, they will learn to be careful with their money.

Whatever you do, don't cave if they ask you for more money. If they say its for school, write a cheque made out to the school, this way they won't be able to spend it.

part time job, or chores around the house. 17 yr olds dont understand what the value of a dollar is, they dont have the consept that to get a 100 dollars that they would spend in 1 hour at the mall you must work the whole day. so as i said chores are usaully the best thing or part time job in a restaurant is good as a waiter or waitress so they can have a little manual labor in the hours are flexible for thier schooling.

have them get a job and pay for everything themselves...don't give in to them at all! If they want to drive, make them pay for car insurance and gas - if they can't afford it, they don't drive. If their grades slip, they don't work which means they don't drive! that's what my mom did to me, more so cause she couldn't afford it being a single parent. but it works. If they are unable to work, give them an allowance of so much money a month, tell them to balance it out. make them buy their own toiletries, clothes, pay for dances, movies, going out with their friends etc...do not give in. If you do, they will abuse it! stop giving them everything they want. I'm not talking just a month...do this for good!

Have them get a job and you don't pay for anything anymore except grocieries. I started working when I was 14 and bought my own clothes, paid for extra curricular activities, paid for my brand new car, and insurance and gas. It made me grow up a lot faster realizing money comes as fast as it can go.

Quit giving them everything. Eventually they will want things and realize you are being serious. Tell them to get a job. Even if it's part time. Only provide the necessities.

do what my mom did with me and my sister show him or her how much you make and ormake up an amount give them how much all the bills cost and how and what to pay first and then ask him/her when it is time to pay the bills again and make sure they keep up when it is time to pay bills, not only will it teach them how to spend money but it teaches how to keep good credit because if he pays it on time why would he have to pay late fees if there are none
