Any one a mate' drinker? How do you get it to be less "thick" on the first infusion?

I'm using a traditional argenitne mate' (gourd), and following my friend's instructions, but it is a little too heavy. Using "La Tranquera" brand yerba...

When the dry mate is in the gourd add some cold water and let the mate absorb it. wait a few moments then add the hot water. Seems to work for me.
