You use the words Black Tie in the lower right hand corner to indicate the attire you just mentioned.

You don't spell out Long dress and Tuxedos-- and you don't put Formal Attire-- that's not proper, because you are presuming your guests are so ill-mannered that they don't know what Black Tie means.

"Black tie" or "Formal Attire" has been the protocol, or at least generally accepted wording, for many years. This would be the appropriate wording in that it keeps with tradition and formality, however, know your audience (invitees). If you suspect too many of the people you're inviting will not know what "black tie" or "formal attire" really means then you run the risk of having them show up inappropriately dressed or at least not how you'd envisioned. In this case it would be best to be as specific as necessary. Deviating from tradition or formality on your wedding invitations is a small price to pay to ensure your guests/wedding go as planned. If you choose "tux and long dress" you may want to specify "black tux".....trust me on this one! :-)

If you are having a formal wedding, you would put something like, "Formal attire". If you are having an outdoor wedding, you may want to somehow put that on the invitation, for instance, "Reception to follow in the Garden".
