My sister's cat was run over by one of her neighbors and they weren't nearly as kind as you were. Accidents happen, that's why they're called accidents. You'll probably think about this for a while and have knee-jerk reactions each time you see an animal near a road. This is completely normal. But eventually you will forgive yourself since you know you didn't do this on purpose.
As for the neighbor, you may just want to leave a card with them about their loss. There are some really, really touching cards out there now to express sympathy for the loss of a pet. It made me feel nice when a friend sent me one when I had to put my cat down. It showed that they really understood that I lost something.

I commend you for doing the right thing. A lot of people would have just been , Oh well, whatever,(like my neighbor!:( ) so you have gone above and beyond what is the norm. Paying the vet bills, good good good... why not go to the pound and let her pick out a new cat or kitten, or even two, when she is ready? Or another pet of her choice. That is about all I can think of, offhand, or maybe ask her directly, what can make this better, I want to make it right. You're doing the right thing. Good luck! :) :)

I am sorry to hear that.... Unfortunately it seems that you have done everything. I am not sure, but covering the vet cost was very big of you, actually taking the cat in, was also big of you... many wouldn't.
I would maybe get a card for them or something? It sounds cheesy, but a card and flowers just as you would if a friend lost a loved one.
rest easy, these things happen all the time, it's just lucky for the cat that you were the driver!
dont be too hard on yourself

You've been extremely thoughtful under the sad circumstances: as several others have commented, this kind of thing will happen if you let your pets roam free. You could certainly send them a card and/or flowers - or the idea of a plant in memory of their cat is nice, too. But don't offer to get them a new cat, please - that's such a personal decision, and one you wouldn't be equipped to make for them. And Please don't turn up on their doorstep with a replacement pet (as some people have sugggested): again, not something you could possibly choose for them. After some time has gone by, you might see how they're feeling about another pet and offer to take them to a shelter or SPCA to see if there's someone they might like to adopt - but do wait awhile. Good luck, and kudos for being a caring individual.

Oof, that is rough! I saw that happen to some poor lady driving a van some years ago when a dog ran out in front of her.
You might try bringing flowers and a card. Don't ask about finding a new cat yet: The owner isn't going to want one for a little while.
When we buried family pets, we usually planted flowers or a shrub over them. Perhaps you can offer that? This is something for you and the owner to work through together.
Feel better.

you've shown them how sorry you are by taking the cat to the vet and doing all you could, and that probably means more to them than the money. I would definitely not suggest getting them another cat as it might seem like you think a cat is just something that can be easily replaced.
hard as it is, try not to feel guilty, it was an accident and you did all you could to rectify it.

Apologize to the owner, pay for the vet bills like you said, and just try to think of it as an accident because from the sound of it, it was.

I'm really soft too when it comes to animals so I'd probably feel the same way. I think you've done just about all you can do to make yourself feel better, you've probably done more than most people would do. Just relax the best you can and get rid of your feelings of guilt... like you said the owner understood and the whole situation was probably unavoidable. It's just unfortunate you happened to be the one involved.

I think it was very kind of you to pay the vet bills. You obviously have a big heart and I commend you. If you want to get him something other than what you've already done (which in my opinion is more than enough) maybe a kitten would hit the spot!
One that does not look anything like the one he had for obvious reasons. Good luck and I wish you were my neighbor.
