No. That's what is so great about this country. You are free to walk the streets without having to worry about some jack-booted thug coming up to you and demanding "Papers!" You are not required to carry ID in this country. That being said, both private industry and the government also reserve the right to refuse you certain services, benefits and access to places without ID. Kind of seems unfair and a catch 22 but that's the way it is.
****To the people that responded that you do need ID. I do not doubt what you say and would love to see the law on this. Do you have any refferences or do you know the state statute that covers this? Thanks *****

Yes it is against the law in MI to go without a Sate ID card or Operator's license. I believe when you turn 16 your eligible to get a state ID card. Of course you have to take drivers training to get an operators license. Good luck with that, BTW if you get caught without a valid state ID it is a crime...so remeber to keep your ID with you! Ooh even if you are from another state you still NEED to be able to provide ID.

Yes and enough money to make a phone call, without that you can be picked up for vagrancy.
