Friday I will eat pasta, bread, salad and fruit. I need to be out the door at 6:30 to drive up to the race. I don't run until 12:30, and I'm not sure what and when I should eat to hold me off for the race. When should I stop eating? Maybe like 10:45 to let my food digest and run on not full but not empty. Thanks for your comments or suggestions. This is my second 5k. One my first I finished 22:23. Practice has been going good and I hope to chop off 30 seconds. Running is awsome!!! Thanks.

I like drummerboy's response. It was pretty much spot on.

I run 5Ks all the time (I finish around 20:10 - 20:30).

Generally, 2.5 hours before race time, I eat a small breakfast. A small bowl of cream of wheat or oats. I also might have an orange. I also drink gatorade, so that by the time race time is starting I am not overly hydrated, but I am urinating clear.

Since your race is at 12:30, I'd say, around 9:30 - 10am, have a small bowl of rice with one of those pouches of tuna. Have an orange or something an hour before the race if need be. Everybody's rate of digesting is different, so you'll have to be a judge for yourself.

I also agree with drummerboy, you don't need to carboload. The race is over in 20 minutes.

Good luck... I have a race (probably) on Saturday and for sure on Sunday.

Ok dude--main thing to remember. Rule number one as far as pre-race routines go: do NOT eat anything different that what you have done in the past bfore running 5K or a similar distance, even when you were training. Stick to what has worked in the past; Don't go messin' with carbo loading if it hasn't served you well before. And a huge mistake a lot of people make concerning carb loading: they eat it too SOON before the race. If you do that it will just sit in your belly and weigh you down. Carbos need at LEAST 24 hours to turn into glycogen (muscle fuel.)
You really dont even need carbo loading to run three miles anyway. Carbo loading is more for distance running: 10K and higher. At only 22 minutes or so of running the carbos will barely have a chance to kick in.
So just eat normal. I suggest a light breakfast--more like a snack about two hours before the race: maybe some fruit or yogurt or a couple granola bars. Maybe some juice and a couple hard-boiled eggs. Or my favorite: Eggo nutri-grain waffle with honey on it instead of syrup and a protein smoothie.
Good luck, keep on truckin and work up to a 10 K.

Eat well the day before. Eat a Clif bar or a Power Bar the day of (something with a little protein, fat & carbs) and drink coffee. Some people say it dehydrates, but you will have water at the race, before, during and after. The caffeine gives you a boost.

the best thing to eat the night prior to a distance run is CARBS. any kind. so what i did before a 5k run for "cross-country" would eat a "kinda" big size plate of spaghetti. now for the morning i would drink water and "gatorade" or whatever sports drink of your liking. now if you would really want to eat something about 1-2 hours before your run...go eat a power bar. that gives you what your body needs just for the run. alittle tip for nocking off some of that time is to build up your endurance, so when your running in practice instead of staying at your normal pace, every so often sprint for about 5-10 seconds then go back to your pace....just repeat that.

Whatever you eat, eat it at least 2 hours before the race. I normally have a bowl of porridge about 3 hours before most of my races so you could try that just before you leave home.

Good luck, with the race.

Nothing. If you have to eat something, make sure it's light and airy and that you have plenty of non-dairy liquids with it. Drink Gatorade or any sports drink to increase salt and electrolytes before and after the race.

something light, banana and a liquid yogurt, or a peach or apple, then mix half water, half gatorade for your race.
