My dad got over 14 deer with that same gun with slugs, i would keep that shotgun and put a scope on it or use open sights.

I've hunted South Texas Whitetail deer with a .25-06 Remington 700 ADL 3x9 scope since 1974 when I bought the rifle new for a then whopping $120. Last year I purchased a new Remington 673 Guide Rifle in 6.5 Remington Magnum and am thinking of using that this deer season or the same model rifle in .350 Remington Mag. purchased new this year. I have a Steyr Mannlicher Pro in .30-06 that might be used this season if I can get a good scope for it by then.
The Mossberg Company makes good all around shotguns. I have a Remington 870 pump 12 gauge with the rifled 22" inch barrel and rifle sights, but I haven't tried it on deer. One year I got the idea of using a shotgun for hunting large game, but have remained a rifle hunter so far. We'll see.

Normally I use a Mossberg 12 guage or a Remington 700 308.
Last year I bought a 5 round magazine (to be legal) and a scope for my AK-47 and dropped one at 140 yards.

THERE ARE SEVERAL THINGS YOU NEED TO CONSIDER
1) WHERE YOU HUNT....CAN YOU USE A RIFLE, SHOTGUN OR BOTH? IF YOU CAN ONLY HUNT WITH A SHOTGUN A 20 GAUGE IS OK BUT A 12GAUGE IS BEST IF YOU CAN USE A RIFLE ANYTHING FROM 243 TO 30.06 WILL DO. IF THE KICK OF GUN IS IMPORTANT TO YOU A 20 GAUGE KICKS LESS THAN A 12 AND AN SEMIAUTOMATIC KICKS LESS THAN A PUMP. IF YOUR LOOKING FOR A RIFLE A 243 OR MY CHOICE (THE PERFECT DEER RIFLE) 7MM08 ARE GREAT DEER RIFLES. IF YOULL BE HUNTING OUT WEST WHERE ITS VERY OPEN AND SHOTS ARE TYPICALLY LONGER A FAST FLAT SHOOTING ROUND LIKE A 270
IS PREFERRED GOOD LUCK

My first deer was killed with a Mossberg 500 12 gauge. I now use a .30-06 bolt which is a good all round rifle.

Depends on the state you are hunting. A shotgun is legal in my state, if you use slugs. A Mossberg 500 is perfectly legal here. Find out what slugs it shoots best. I have hunted with shotguns before (Rem. 870 and Win 1300), but prefer muzzleloaders. Currently I hunt with either a .54 flintlock custom made rifle, or a .50 T/C Omega.

depends where I hunt. 12 gauge remington 870 slug barrel with iron sights. Rifles are not allowed in some place in the state where I hunt.
Otherwise i use a Ruger 30-06 bolt action

I've used several. Minimum is a .243 Winchester Mannlicher, and maximum is a .300 Winchester Magnum Sako Finnbear Deluxe. Both are bolt-action. My brother used a .30-30 Winchester M-94 lever-action.

(Man oh man, you sure drew some interesting responses).
Best bet is to just get an inexpensive new or used rifle in a middle of the road caliber like 243win or 270win. Their both comfortable rounds and will get the job done without blowing your Deer to eternity and back. After all! most folks who hunt Deer, also enjoy eating it - right? If you used say a 50cal you can forget that idea all together. (heck! you might be lucky enough to find a hoof after wards if you looked hard enough-maybe. hahaha!).
Good luck in your venture.
