If you need to only use a piece of an onion, use what you need and continue to peel the whole onion. Rinse it under cold water and pat dry with a paper towel. You should be able to keep it in a sandwich bag for about 5 days without smelling it.
Put a box of baking soda in the fridge and the freezer. Not only does it absorb smells, but also keeps foods from sharing flavors.

Try leaving a sliced lime or lemon in the fridge. Also cleaning the fridge with baking soda and water will also work.

Always wrap the onion in cling-film or in a air-tight container.

If you only need 1 tiny piece of onion:

1. Place the remainder into a pot full of cold water.
2. Put a slice of potato into the water.
3. After 10 minutes, remove the onion and potato
4. place on absorbent kitchen paper, to drain.
5. Wrap both, tightly, in cling film.
6. Throw into the nearest rubbish bin.
7. Buy a new onion, cheapskate!!

Well for one thing, you really don't have to put onions in the fridge. My mom puts them in the laundry room, and they don't smell there, and they don't rot very fast either even out of the fridge. But if you want them to be in the fridge before you use them, you can take them out of the laundry room (or wherever else they may be) and put them in a bowl of water covering it to the top, and then put it to chill in the refridgerator. Did you know that if you cut onions in water, you don't even tear? i forget the logic behind this, but one reeeeaaally gross example of this working in real life is ... the toilet.

i know, sorry i had to put bad images in your head, but anyway, it serves the same purpose. If you put onions in water, their scent does not carry. Even better, put them in water in the airtight container. Just make sure you don't leave it there for days or as a regular means of storage because it will rot faster that way, I'm pretty sure.
hope that helped, and didn't gross you out too much!

All I do is be careful not to cut the butt of the onion, wrap the remaining in clingwrap, then put it in a plastic baggie. I also have baking soda in the fridge don't know how much that factors in.

Mix a few spoons of bicarbinate of soda with water to neutralise smells in your fridge. It works with most pungent odours and is cheap. Also wrap the onion in a few folds of cling film if you want an added but less efficient solution.

You need to put an open container of baking soda in your fridge to absorb the smells.

In addition to cskitten's lemon trick, put a box of baking soda with the top open in your fridge. It does a good job of absorbing refrigerator odors. They even make a special package with a porous package that is especially meant for this purpose.

Before putting in the fridge don't cut the root end and wrap at least 3 times in plastic bags or cling film.
