You may be thinking of a diffuser box. It's a large rectangular frame with black cloth on the back and a thin white cloth on front - the flash is inside. By shooting it through the white cloth, the light is spread out more evenly onto the area, 'diffusing' it so that there are no harsh highlights or shadows. Standard equipment for most portrait photographers.

Those are reflectors, they are used to not only bounce light from the flash, but to bounce natural light on the model, or the background.
Try holding a white paper near something thats fairly dark, you'll notice it brightens it up just a bit.

Those big white things are to collect gamma rays, so then they can see through the clothing of their subjects on the photographs, and then sell the photos to nude magazine's.
