an instrument should be cool. It not only opens doors to the whole world! it teaches you about committment....

I did not go to grade school here in the US (thank goodness) cause grade school and HS here give very bad attitudes and too much peer pressure to our youth today. My GS and HS was so much fun!

Where I grew up it was cool to be in band in elementary school. Once you hit 7th grade you are a nerd. I dont know if this is because they dont offer a full array of instruments ( Like guitar or whatever) but it is a great learning experience and I think any type of art is awesome for kids to be exposed too.

I think it's ignorant too. I never was in band but I know why young kids think it's nerdy. Band students tend to be smarter, rule abiding, and generally nicer kids. To young kids those are faults. But what they don't realize is that HS lasts for 4 measely years but those qualities that band teaches you last a lifetime. For all you band geeks out there, hang in there, one day you'll be the boss to those kids who teased you. Trust me i've seen it over and over.

Kids get their attitudes about that sutff form tv and movies.. with the exception of School of Rock.. have you ever seen a movie where the band kids were portrayed as cool?... probably not.. plus kids tend to lok down on anything that they themselves do not or can not do..

The HS that I went to was more of an artsy school. The music, drama, and art programs there were what drew most of the students who went to that school. I was lucky, my band years went by without the unfair label of "band geek" attached.

Band was a requirement at my old school and actually we all loved band. We got to play at amusement parks and perform and then spend the rest of the day on the rides. We went to all sorts of competitions and it was alot of fun. I agree, it shouldn't be considered "nerdy".

I agree with you. Band is a wonderful thing. My sons were in band and debating. The kids they graduated with who were in those 2 groups have done exceptionally well in life as a whole. The "jocks" have become used car salesmen.

because all the cool people quit band after a while and the only people left are the nerds because they have nothing better to do. therefore band is very nerdy. i saw my schools band perform and everyone in band is wierd and no one ever talks to them
