How many will usually pass at one time?

It depends on several factors. First, the size of said stone. If it's too large, it may cause more damage as it passes, so the doctors will probably keep you longer for observation. Second, the severity of the passing. A harder passing can be a symptom of other health issues, so they will keep you longer for that. And that leads into the third option: If you really do have any other health concerns. Doctors can't force us to go in to the hospital, but once we're there, we're stuck there until they say we can go. If you've avoided going in for too long, there can quite possibly be much more wrong with you than just a kidney stone, and doctors will look for that. Once you're in their hospital, you can't get out until you have a clean bill of health, however long that may be.

That having been said, however, if you have an easy passing and there are no other concerns, you could be sent home that night or sooner. There is one boy I know who passed a stone and was in class three hours later. Mind you, he was still in pain and was sitting very gingerly, but otherwise fine.

Good luck.
