next time, first thing you should do is tape the product key to the case of your pc so you never have to worry about losing it.

I would really like to believe that you are telling the truth. (The story is old, as just about every person wanting registration key for Windows XP says, "I lost the box").
How does one loose the box if the disk is new. If you threw out the box not realizing that the registration key and bar code is printed on the side of the box, you should search your garbage can in your home. If it is already outside, perhaps the garbage truck has not come to pick up the garbage and you can retrieve the box.
If all fails, you have just wasted your money and will have to purchase a new Windows XP Prof., as I am sure no person who reads your question is going to be a party to a criminal act giving you a registration key.
Plus Microsoft has become really hard core. All updates they check atleast my registration key atleast four times.

If your computer came with a pre-installed copy of XP, then there should be a Microsoft sticker on your computer case which has the OEM key.
If you bought XP seperately, then there's nothing you can do. When you activate XP, Microsoft doesn't keep any personal information about you, so you can't just call a Microsoft rep. to help you.
I don't suggest using a crack either. Some of them have trojans in them. The crack will work, but something else gets installed on your system. Anti-virus and anti-spy programs won't find anything. Heck, even some of the web sites that provide crack programs will try to download a malicious activeX control onto your computer when you visit.

Unfortunately you will not be able to reinstal XP. Microsoft really started to crack down on piracy with XP. If you don't have the product key, there is no way to install it.
You're stuck going and buying a new box with XP and starting over.

I recommend calling Microsoft and telling them what happened. Or buy a new Windows product key. You can buy a new official product key at microsoft.com but don't pirate it. It's illegal. Also you can't download anything from Microsoft. So buy a product key at microsoft.com so you don't have to buy a new disk.
