Because they feel left out. When you speak a language that not everyone in the room understands, they feel as though they are missing something or being excluded. That's not to say that you shouldn't speak Spanish - as it was said, this is America, WHERE WE HAVE FREEDOM OF SPEECH; however, in the interest of being a good coworker, you might not want to speak it too much in their presence. I think this is an issue of respect.

working in a setting in which my co-workers speak spanish and I only speak English is very difficult. Being the new person sucks but when your co-workers are sitting around, laughing and joking in spanish, it doesn't make you feel very welcome. I end up eating lunch alone and pretty much work alone. This is America. No English is not the official language (it is in CA) but it is the language most commonly used to make us feel a part of each other. People always trying to be so individual are doing nothing more than causing more prejudice. I do enjoy my German heritage but don't constantly dwell on it. Do Mexican's know the background of the iron cross? They all have it on their vehicles here.

I'm French, but I'll have to agree with what the others are saying. Justa Thought is wrong when he says that most people in Europe speak 3 languages! That's just a big joke (except maybe for a few Eastern European countries, in town, when they can get an education)! If they can speak 2 languages, that's great! Maybe some people can speak more than 2 languages, but that's usually not required at your work place - except if you work in International Business!

Anyway. If you constantly speak in another language, they indeed might thnk you're talking bad about them. Of course, if you're just saying a few words, they shouldn't really be bothered. But considering there are some tensions between Americans and people who come from South America, their reaction is understandable, don't you think?

If you tend to use the same sentences (maybe you're just swearing), just translate for them afterwards. They'll get used to the sentences and will realize you're not talking bad about them.

I know there's no official language in America, but everyone in the world think that English is their official language. I know it doesn't really prove anything; but my point is: a common language is what unites a country. It makes communication easier. I love learning languages (I'm going to study Spanish again in a couple of years before travelling in South America, and would like to know other languages), but I don't see why people who live in a country wouldn't learn the language of that country. It just makes things easier for everyone, and I don't see why I should have to learn the language of every single ethnicity who has decided to live in France (Romanian, Portuguese, Arab, English, German in the North...). That would be a nightmare! I do make an effort when someone doesn't speak my language, of course.

That being said... Like I said, just translate for them, and tell them that you're not talking sh*t about them. Hopefully, they won't be too paranoid, and will believe you!!! You never know with people, sometimes...

are you in the US? my guess is yes. If so, this is the most xenophobic society I have experienced. americans generally can't even speak english, let alone another language; they are insecure, and act like it is your duty to speak in a language they have SOME familiarity with even if the conversation is a private one. I say, use whatever language you want. you will end up being bilingual, but don't let the americans initmidate the "foreign" language out of you. Most respectable jobs in europe have three languages as a basic requirement - americans couldn't hack it.

the reason is because they do not understand you. They feel you are disrecpectful speaking a different language that they are not able to understand. They feel that you might be talking about them. Just put yourself in there shoes, how would you feel if you couldn't understand what someone was saying in a different language.

because it is impolite in the extreme to talk a language which other people don't understand. They might think that you are talking bad things about them. It is very confusing for them, don't you feel that?

In America, we speak ENGLISH!!!!! I'm so sick of people thinking we should add things in Spanish to signs and things. Why should we accomodate you? My daughter has children attending her school that barely speak English. Do you know how hard this is for the teachers and that child? SPEAK ENGLISH!!!

show spain this IIII I . S where s has a \ at the top end and it means the \=il when put together.

thats what it means. your promised visitation of LORD GOD has arrived. tought to beleive. but remember you Lord Jesus said not to test the LORD GOD. reason being even Jesus could perform not real miracles. But emperor wrote that crap about God because bible makes HIM out to be better that HIM. So that anyone who is GOD will be de=bunked cause He is as human as the emperor, the supreme authority on earth. so don't be surprised if God can't make that clock fly to His hand by just willing it to.

Could be because your co-workers don't understand what you are saying, but they automatically assume you are talking about them.
