What is the epistemology behind "giving someone the gears"?

So here I am telling someone that I am just "giving them the gears" and of course what do they do --- ask "where the heck did that expressions come from?"

Google google google ... DOH! no answer.

So maybe someone here knows where the expression came from.

"Epistemology" is the study of truth. So what is the truth behind the statement? How does it relate to the overall nature of truth in our world or in our universe?
