it got a bacterial and yeast infection? In addition to that, not once but twice the birds wings have been clipped without your consent. The first clip was a baby clip, not to short, I accepted that, but this time they are considerably shorter (no longer can she fly from perch to perch, I sure that makes them happy) and the bird is obviously unhappy ( it's an African Grey). The damage is done, too late to do anything but I'm wondering if my frustration is justified or am I being nit picky? When she arrived at the store she was in good health, she is now caged with 4 big birds. I can't take her out of the store without a clean bill of health, but I want to get her home, she's paid for and I've bonded with her over the past few months.

Is she weaned yet?
If she is, get her out of there and get her to a Vet. If she is not, ask how many feedings she is on at the moment.
She should be in the process of being weaned. 13 weeks is about when most Baby Greys begin to get the idea of solid food on a full time basis. Sometimes it's more time, sometimes a lot more. But 13 weeks is about when they should start.
If she is not yet weaned, (and that could be possible) she needs to stay there until she is. If you could get the store owner to move her to her own cage until she is ready to go home, that would be better than what's going on now.
You mentioned a bacterial infection. What exactly was the infection and what did they treat her with? Was the bacteria: Klebsiella? Did she go to a Vet? Did they treat her with Diflucan?
If I were you, I would consult with an Avian Vet and find out what they think based on the answers to the questions I just posed.
Find out this information, check this out with a Vet and see what their advisory is.
It sounds like she might have gotten a sour crop, or she picked up something in a not-so-clean cage.
In any event, you need to find out what type of bacterial infection it was, (if they know) and how they treated it. Let the Vet take it from there. The Vet just might take over the rest of the weaning for you in a cleaner environment.
I don't think you should finish the weaning yourself. It's a tricky business.
Get some Professional help and see what you can do about finding what's going on before making any decisions, but I hope you still have the contract on Baby Grey. Please make sure you have it, read it over carefully and make sure you do everything you are required to do to fullfill your end of it.
If I can be of any more assistance, please do not hesitate to ask.
Best of Luck.

The joys of PET store animals. The law requires all animals to have the clean bill of health and the sickness your bird got could have been attained BEfore he/she got to the store. Birds hide illness VERY well and sometimes you wont know it until it's almost too late. The best thing to do is get a bird from a WELL KNOWN breeder and stay away from PET Stores.
I've seen birds that appeared healthy as an ox and a month later die from something they got at a PET Store. And too, for those that got a healthy animal and it stayed healthy, your lucky....... As for the wing-clip? It's for the safety of the bird. Birds can still fly short distances with clipped wings. I'd recommend to anyone with birds to keep the wings clipped.

Talk to the store manager about it. If that doesn't get results find the corporate headquarters & make some calls. You deserve a healthy bird (probably a new 1) or a full or partial refund. If you are set on that bird, demand that it be put in a cage by itself. This has gone on far too long!

In my personal experience, a threat to bring in the Dep of Ag usually gets you a reduced price, if not a free bird.
I got my $800 bird for $25 when I threatened to do so and pass out leaflets about the conditions at the store.

Just take the bird - it belongs to you - or ask for your money back. Doesn't seem like you're dealing with ethical people. If it has
ANY health problems it should not be housed with other birds. And FYI $1500.00 is REALLY high for and African Gray.

I would feel that I had been really stupid in buying a bird from a store instead of going to a private breeder who didn't mix loads of strange birds together and risk giving them infections.

I think you need to get your money back. Call the Better Business Bureau. Ask to talk to the vet the store is using.

you should take it to another vet and have the ones who caused you distress pay for the bill. and don't worry about the feathers cause they grow back.
