Gaia...Well i think this is what you're referring to ...the Gaia hypothesis proposed by James Lovelock. When the earth seeks to maintain a homeostasis. Its fascinating..well i think lol

Anne McCaffrey did a series of books with that general theme. I think the first was "Killishandra". I know "Crystal Song" and "Crystal Singer" are part of the series.
