Unfortunatly you do not have to be informed of the search, depending on the circumstances I am not sure that it would be practicable to inform every parent of a search. The search should however be recorded, detailing the grounds for that search. The ginge part is completely out of order though.

If your son is over 10yrs, he can be stopped and searched on the street. There has to be a reason, such as he may fit the description of an offender in the area, etc. The police will fill a form out. If your son hasnt got a copy, you can get one from the police station on request.
Its perfectly normal and you do not need to be informed. Your son told you about it... he informed you, didnt he?
Im sure it was all above board.... maybe the "ginge" remark was a poor attempt by the officer to be light hearted with your son.

I am glad to hear the police in your area are being proactive and doing stop checks in your area. You would be amazed at how many children your sons age carry knives on the street these days. Stop checks on children are a sad reflection on society these days.

your son is over 10, thats the age of criminal liability, he knows right from wrong. if he were searched he would have been given a pink piece of paper called an 1800, thats your record. can you imagine the carnage if every police officer had to inform every parent of every under 18 they search even if the result was negative?

I thought there was a section of the Stephen Lawrence Enquiry that meant that all Stop and Searches had to be recorded.
Surely you should have been informed.

I don't know.

However, I do know Sonny's Lettah by Linton Quesi Johnson. A superb poem.

I find it shocking that a 12 year old can be treated like that and the parent not informed.
What country are you in?
