I know a lot of people are against IAMS dog food, but I used it with great success when I was raising Boston Terriers. Just get the puppy version. Science Diet is good too. You may think this weird but if you feed a high quality dog food, it's cheaper in the long run. The dog gets more nutrition out of less feed - even less poop to clean up, simply because the dog eats less.

A veterinarian will not recommend a low quality food. Vets do not receive kick-backs from any food companies. They pay for their own dog food, just like their clients do. Vets stay up to date on all current information regarding nutrition, etc, and are currently in discussions about the raw diet craze. You can read about this on the American Veterinary Medical Association Website. Our vet feeds his yorkie Royal Canin's oral care food. Does the poster realize that "chicken meal," which is listed in her favorite food's ingredients, may include dead or dying chickens? No feathers, beaks, nor feet, but the animals can be sick. That's because the process kills bacteria and parasites. Disgusting, I know, but true. Also, including the skin and fat necessarily makes this brand of food also include by-products, which are other than muscle meat, but edible/digestible. Stay with a well-known, vet-recommended food for your dog. They obviously know more than people on yahoo answers! Have been to school for eight years to become a vet, so trust him. Feeding home-cooked foods doesn't take into account the needs a dog has for various vitamins, minerals, etc. The food companies have already done the research. I have fed (before I worked at the vet hospital) Purina for 9 years to our lab - then changed to Science Diet, and she lived to be 15. Our other labs have always been fed science diet. They lived to 12 and 14. Our current lab mix is eating the same and is healthy and happy. I'm doing the best I know how to do, based on what I have learned.

Royal Canin rates about average on the pet food scale, there are definitely worse (such as Science Diet, Iams, Eukanuba - all garbage) and there are definitely better (Innova, Wellness, Canidae, Fromm, etc).

Here are the ingredients of the puppy formula:
-CHICKEN MEAL (good)
-BROWN RICE (good)
-CHCKEN FAT (good but should not be third ingredient)
-RICE (good)
-CORN GLUTEN MEAL (should never be in pet foods)
-BEET PULP (should never be in pet foods)
-CHICKEN (good)
-CELLULOSE POWDER (should not be in pet foods)
-DRIED EGG POWDER (should not be in pet foods)

So, this food starts off pretty good but then Royal Canin starts adding fillers that have nutritional value like corn, beet pulp, cellulose, etc so that the is cheap and they can make a ton of money off of it.

Now, Innova is one of the best quality foods on the market. Look at the difference in ingredients.

Innova Puppy:
Turkey
Chicken
Chicken Meal
Ground Barley
Ground Brown Rice
Potatoes
Natural Flavors
Ground White Rice
Chicken Fat
Herring
Apples
Carrots
Cottage Cheese
Sunflower Oil
Alfalfa Sprouts
Egg
Garlic

Innova is made with only whole, fresh, human grade ingredients, unlike Royal Canin and you would probably actually save money because you feed less of Innova because it is so nutrient dense.

Anyways, if I were you I would switch now and start your dog off early on the best food. You will be much better off in the long run when you don't have those expensive vet bills.

Find a food you like and stick with it as changing food can upset a pus stomach. And a 6 weeks yours is very young.
Royal Canin is a very good food one of the better ones that is available in the pet stores. If you like it stick with it and try not to change diets. If you do do it slowly over a period of about two weeks so it will prevent the stomach problems.
With a Yorkie you need to be feeding a high quality food as they are tiny and you want to be sure that the amount they eat is good stuff beacuse they eat so little.

It is just trial and error with food to see which 1 your dog reacts best to, I got my yorkshire terrier 9 years ago and he had a very temperemental stomach as a puppy. It took a year of trying everything I could think of and eventually he took to chappie complete food. Now as an adult he eats everything in sight including curry if he can steal it away from me.

Good Luck

For a 6 weeks old yorkshire terrier it should still be with its mother. They are late weaners compared to most other breeds.
