Presently, there arent too many "rules" while eating in the military.

Now, in basic training (Army is all I know) there is no speaking, and of course all meals are rushed. Once you get through the line, and sit with your food you only have about ten minutes to finish your meal. Diets are restricted, especially during the first phases of training (no soda, no dessert, etc.).

And then of course there are specialty schools (like Warrant Officer Candidate). These places still perform the "old school" traditions. The main one is the eating of "square meals", and this means that each motion you take is made in 90 degree movements. So each time you take your fork from the plate to mouth, you make a big right angle......can become very tedious.

I hope this helps a little.

In the Army during Basic there was very little time allowed for eating. The next thing is that you could not sit down until your Drill instructor sat down. If an officer walked into the mess hall then you were or whoever recognized him first has to say ATTENTION! and then he would reply AT EASE and you continued eating. If you were standing and waiting to get into the chow line you had to be reading your SMART book which is just the green manual that the Army hands out to all the recruits. If an officer went alongside the chow line again, you or someone needs to recognize this person by saying ATTENTION and then he would relax you by replying AT EASE.

When eating as an entire unit, junior enlisted are first in line, then senior enlisted, finally officers. This is done so as to "take care of the men first".

Also, there are traditions and rules that tend to apply only in training schools such as Basic.

Take all you want, eat all you take is the only rule I remember in the Navy. What rules? Never heard of such things in 21 years of service.

if you are talking the Regs while in Basic Training/Boot Camp.. good luck getting an answer. that's part of the mystery. Same with any of the Academies.

and besides, shouldn't you be doing your own research, not asking a bunch of yahoos(pun intended) who are more than likely going to give you a smart @ss remark anyway?!

There aren't really any rules for how to eat, except in boot camp. I don't know about it in great detail, but in the Marines you have to eat everything on your plate or the DI's will be on you.
