Lots of forest fires fail to start with one match. If 90% of the matches (or cigarettes, or whatever) burn out without starting a fire, you never hear about them. You only hear about the minority that start the fires. With a campfire, you notice every match you use.

Ha ha, I've always thought that myself, it's like my roll-ups keep going out and I have to relight them, but if I threw one in the bin it'd catch the bin on fire and burn the house down!

You need kindling and paper. Matches alone won't do the job.
