Mona Lisa has no eyebrows because that was a sign of upperclass-absolutely NO facial hair; they even plucked the hair line back a bit because a normal hair line seemed to neanderthal. As for her smile: all the porttraits of the same time NEVER showed any emotion. Mona Lisa was that first baby step into the teeth showing smiles we know now. Mona Lisa is not a self-portrait of Leonardo its just his style of painting...if you know anyone who creates art-look ask them to draw a face and you'll probably see a resemblance between that face and the artist's. it just proves that the best model is the artist themselves. Another reason why Mona Lisa is so famous is because Leonardo only actually finished 7-8 paintings and, yes, he did carry Mano Lisa around.

the mona lisa is a famous painting due to the conspiracy theories that surround it...

I mean davinci paints a woman that looks like himself in a way...

and also the background of the mona lisa the left side of the horizon line is higher making lisa appear to be turned slightly..

so much conspiracy around if davinci was gay or a crossdresser have been brought up and this painting was another oblect to fuel the conspiracy fire...
thats why its so popular

There's a mystery surrounding the Mona Lisa, as to her identity. Some people even think that it was a self portrait of Leonardo Da Vinci as he saw himself if he were a woman.

I have seen the Mona Lisa in person and I was rather underwhelmed too. I know that it's a 500 yr. old painting and they are still discovering things about how it was painted. Plus, Leonardo DaVinci is one of the most prominent painters of all time so a painting that well-preserved and detailed is going to get a great deal of attention.

its more like the person who painted the painting is what makes the mona lisa painting famous.
Plus people find her mysterious. Shes all dark and gloomy and kinda smiling and not smiling.

It's a very important work. Leonardo da Vinci did not complete many paintings to this level of finish and it is also a superb example of the sfumato technique he invented. It also illustrates da Vinci's moti mentali, or motions of the mind. A moments thought caught in a facial gesture. The landscape depicted in the painting is a place where Leonardo would have probably surveyed on during his work with Cesare Borgia and thus gives credence to Leonardo's movements during his life time. This is part of its importance as a piece of art history.

As for its fame, well that has a lot to do with the mystery that surrounds the painting. What you have to appreciate is that you as a viewer has the right to like or dislike a painting but its importance is of no relevance to the general public . Its value lies with what information it can provide for the art historian. I agree that there have been far more beautiful paintings created during the Renaissance and beyond and that many painters other than Leonardo contributed to art but (and I'm putting my art historians hat on now) you can not compare a painting which is simply nice to look at to a painting which imparts so much valuable information and demands constant research.

Honestly, I don't know....
The artistic work in it is good, but I've seen better.
It became very famous when someone started a rumour that it was actually a painting of da Vinci as a woman. This is what started it.
Though most people think her smile makes her so famous.

I think is mostly because is considered one of Leonardo Da Vinci master piece... and the theory that it might be Leonardo’s self portrait as a female... besides that his sketches or paintings had a lot to do more with human anatomy, inventions and biblical scenarios... so it kind of makes me wondering... who was Mona Lisa if she was some one important in the time that Leonardo did a portrait about her. is just intriguing!

because nobody is sure who Da Vinci really painted, except that he painted.

otherwise, I find it pretty dull and rather boring as well (and i like classical artwork, I'm not prejudiced against it), I found out that in real life, the actual painting may just be a bit smaller than a piece of paper.

It is so famous because of the questions surrounding it. The latest question on yahoo is that people may think that it is because she is pregnant.
