VISA, everybody excepts Visa! You could go to India and they'd still take your card.

Sam,
it all starts with classical approach to understand your need first, why you want to own a credit card, then one can look at possible benefits that can accrue to you based on your spending profile. And no credit card offers any "global promotions" these offers are dynamic and keep changing with their marketing plans. You can be a "net beneficary" should you want to earn the loyal points and not pay for them indirectly provided you make your payments on time and dont roll over the credit and this depends on your basic need.

There's no single answer to this question because the best card or set of cards depends on your spending profile. Let me explain...
The best way to use credit cards is to use them like cash and pay off the balance every month. If you do that, then there are many rewards to be had from funnelling your spending through cash back credit cards.
The cash back reward you can earn from credit cards depends on your particular spending profile -- especially how much you spend in various categories (e.g. gas, grocery, restaurants, utilities, etc.)
To better understand this, you can use the free calculator tool at
"Credit Card Tune-Up: Maximize Your Cash Back Rewards" ( http://www.CreditCardTuneUp.com/ ). It makes choosing the best cash back card (or mix of cards) pretty easy. Given your spending pattern, it calculates your expected annual rewards for each of the leading cash back credit cards and even for your best mix of cards.

Assuming you have established credit for at least a year...without any lates you might want to apply for a CHase VISA
They have the best rates, low intro int rates, and throughout int rate...provided that you don't ever get a late payment
DOn't get the following credit cards:
Capital One----unless you are trying to establish credit...they have high interest rates
Discover cards---are good but don't offer many benefits

American Express - it is accepted most places globally,
you must pay the balance in full monthly reducing the risk of excessive credit card debt and next to a home mortgage it is the best credit reference available

My visa pays 1% cash back. Unlike discover which pays you UP TO 1% if you spend enough. Mine is bank of america, but it used to be fleet. I don't know what happened, but our plan didn't change. Visa is the widest accepted card in the world. The only problem is that when you buy something in a foreign currency to you they are now charging a 3% foreign currency transaction fee. I'm not happy about that.

You really can't say "visa" as a blanket statement-- Unlike Amex or Discover, different banks and companies offer Visas at vastly different rates, fees, etc.
Discover is wonderful-- they've got a great online account access, reasonable rates, and they REALLY work with you if you run into trouble and cant make all the payments-- for a friend of mine they were crediting her $67 a month (One late fee and one overlimit fee) for SIX MONTHS if she paid $75 each month...it helped tremendously.
