i have 2 male cats (ages 8 and 1) and need to be sure that what am feeding them will not give them long-term problems (am feeding them wet canned Friskies). So far, had no problems but someone here said that i run the risk of urethra blockage later on in cat's life.

Actually, you won't find any really good food in a supermarket. For the good stuff you'll have to go to a pet shop or on line.

If you're not in a financial position to buy top quality food, follow this basic rule of thumb: the worst wet food is better for your cat than the best dry.

Here's a website that will teach you more about feeding your cat than most vets know:

http://www.catinfo.org

You'll learn about cats' nutritional needs, why you should avoid dry foods, how to select proper food, and so on. It's all solid scientific information but it's presented in language you don't have to be a doctor or a scientist to understand.

If you read all the way through it, near the end you'll come to a link in the text that leads to a page with specific information about particular brands of food.

You'll also learn how to read a label so you can tell the good stuff from the crap, or even the half-decent stuff from the crap if the very best is out of your financial reach.

Edit: just re-read you post and you did ask specifically about foods available in supermarkets. The information on the catinfo site will show you how to read the labels and figure out what's the best of what's available at your local store.

Be aware that there can be a big difference in the quality of different flavors of the same brands.

As for urinary tract blockages, avoid wet foods with any significant ash content, and avoid dry foods.

I see that you're already feeding kitty canned, so you're off to a good start, and you interest in what's good for kitty will surely lead to a longer and healthier life. ConCATulations!

NONE - seriously its all junk. But if you have no choice, then go with Purina One. I highly suggest you invest on high quality foods gotten at Petco or Petsmart. And all dry will cause more problems in the long run. Ideally you should choose from Wellness, Blue Buffalo, Natural Balance, Merrick, Royal Canin or Max Cat. You want to look for REAL meat as the first ingredients on the list and not by-products, corn, other grains. The cat will be a lot better off if you feed quality canned foods too.

The blockage is most likely to occur with a diet of only dry food.

The supermarket does not carry the best quality canned meat for cats. I just today bought some cans of Wellness and Natural Balance for my cats at our local pet discount store. You may have to go to a small, owner-operated pet store to get the better foods. If you do feed any dry food get the quality brands of that too.

I have been comparing prices on quality foods vs. grocery store foods just for my own information and now have a list of foods, the ingredients, their prices etc. I am finding to my amazement that the difference between high quality food and poor food is sometimes only as high as 50 cents a bag or 25 cents a can.

Friskies is lousy food. So use NB or Wellness, Chicken Soup for the Cat Lover's Soul, Felidae, etc. Get a few cans of each and see which ones are the biggest hit with your cats.

I like 8 lives. Also with 8 lives you can Uslly buy them pretty chep! But really there are no HUGE diffentecs Or, a cheper way is to buy some food and put water in it. Also if none of these work you can always call a vet and he can tell you what the best or the good and chep way to do it!
Good luck!

Iams is the best available at the store.
wet cat food is not really that good for them, though. it's bad for thier teeth, so try to offer them crunchy food, too.
you should try a urinary tract formula if you are concerned about their urethral health

You cannot buy real quality pet food in a supermarket.
Your pets live depends on what you feed them (a blood test at a vet's office will proof it to you - proofed it to me!).
Might be worth it to you to take a trip to PetCo or PetSmart and buy Science Diet. I think it's the best out there. My cats are both over 15 years and are in great health.
Also keep in mind that there is cat food for different ages - be sure to give the older one "Senior Cat Food" and the other (if it's older than a year) regular "Adult Cat Food."
If you give your pets cheap and crappy food, you definately won't save in vet bills and shorten your pets live considerably!

Yikes! I give my cats Friskies also. I have not heard anything about urethra blockage:

"there are now a lot of foods available in grocery and pet stores that say things like "urinary formula" or "aids in the prevention of urinary tract disease". I know from treatment experience that many of these diets are NOT good enough to prevent urinary tract disease in those cats which are prone."

Oh, by the way... Iams is good food, but they do animal testing. Your call.
