Im getting a dog sometime soon but don't know which kind to get. I want one that does NOT get really big, does NOT have lots of fur (ex: st. bernard). I want one that will grow to be medium sized and likes kids.

try some kind of terrier, or maybe a spaniel. they are medium sized dogs and does not shed that much. if bought or adopted from a pound at a young age, for example 6 weeks to 2 months old, they will grow up with the kids and be very well adjusted to you and your family.

The best thing you can do for yourself and your family is either get an all-breed dog book or go to a dog show. Dogs are very individual tastes and what's right for someone else may not be right for you at all.

If you look at all the breeds available, narrow it down to the ones you like the looks of, then research that breed to find out about their temperaments, energy levels, health problems, grooming needs, etc. This way you'll get the perfect breed for your family. There's dozens of dogs out there who are good with kids, so try and meet a few dogs from breeds you're interested in to get a better feel for the breed. Good luck in your search!

Boston Terrier. It may not get as big as you want, but they are the best dogs with kids. They are loyal protecters have tons of energy.Mine is almost 15 years old and still acts like a puppy. They adapt to change very well, not cold weather they are not cold weather dogs, they like it warm. My sisters and I are all grown now the youngest is 14 so the dog was not used to very young kids and another sister had a baby and the dog just adores her,she rolls around on him and they sleep together, she is two now and he adjusted to her quite nicely. Boston Terriers are just the best little dogs you could ask for. They are super smart too, although everyone says that about their dogs.Energy wise though you cant beat a boston terrier.

Get yourself a "tin of baked beans" a.k.a. a mongrel. A collie cross is ideal, they are cute, lovable, strong and healthy, easy to train, not too expensive to buy or keep, and usually a delight to have around. They also tend to live longer than pedigree dogs so the whole family can expect to have years of fun and love. The children will adore their very own scruffy little "Mutt"!

If I were you I would go to the AKC website. You can look up different breeds and what their needs are (walks, open space, etc). You should ask yourself what you are willing to give and what you can provide a dog. Look at the website provided and then click on Alphabetical List of Breeds to start your search.
Good Luck!!!

You might consider a Bichon Frise ("BEE-shon Free-ZAY").

They are "gentle mannered, sensitive, playful and affectionate. A cheerful attitude is the hallmark of the breed" (AKC). I believe they like to please their owners by learning tricks.

As with all breeds, you have to get them from reputable sources, or the dog will not fit the description. A Bichon Frise from a bad line might actually end up being not so friendly.

depending on the time and size of house you have a cocker spaniel would be a great dog with kids. I had 2 when i was younger and my brother would hang on the dog, and the dog would just let her.

A lab..yellow,black or chocolate

they dont shed much, they stay fairly medium size..there short hair..and are excellent with kids

ive got a 6m old lab pup whos awesome with my 17m old baby!

and border collies are NOT good with kids..they overly bark and are annoying..and shed like crazy/long haired too. we have a border collie/chichuaua and a black lab..the lab and the chichuaua are the best dogs..the border collie is annoying and VERY mean with kids.

cocker spaniels are nice dogs to have and they get along with kids, just keep away from any kind of terriers.
