Why do so many people like to own guns? The answer is that different people own guns for different reasons.

Some people own guns so that they can hunt.
Some people own guns because they enjoy recreational target practice.
Some people own guns because they enjoy competitive target practice.
Some people own guns because they like to collect historical things, and guns are a big part of history.
Some people own guns for self-protection from criminals or to protect their families and neighbors from criminals.
Some people own guns because they ARE criminals or want to intimidate people.
Some people own guns to defend their nation against invasion without having to be part of the military.
Some people own guns to act as a check-and-balance against their government becoming a dictatorship.
Some people own guns because they spend a lot of time where there are potentially dangerous animals.
Some people own guns because they are heirlooms that were passed down from their parents, grandparents, etc.

There are lots of good reasons to own guns, and only one bad one (to commit crimes with or to use to intimidate people).

Guns are inanimate objects, they cannot be good or bad. They are simply tools, and if owned by a good and honest person will be put to good and honest uses, but if owned by a bad person will be used for evil. Just like a hammer -- if an honest carpenter owns it, he will use it to build homes for people. But if a murderer owns it, he will use it to bash someones head in. Or a car -- if an honest person owns it they will use it to go to and from work or school and so on, but if a dishonest person owns it they will use it to help them commit crimes and get away faster.

In this day and age many people take a foolish position that "guns are evil and should be outlawed" because they perceive that most gun owners are criminals or psychos -- nothing is further from the truth. In fact, only about 1% at most of all guns in private hands in the USA will EVER be used in a crime (that statistic comes directly from FBI and BATFE studies) -- which means that 99% of privately-owned guns are NOT going to be used in crimes. Pretty amazing when you consider the percentage of the US population who are career criminals, and that there are probably more guns than people in the USA (based on known gun ownership rates and the number of people who don't report gun ownership because they fear confiscation). The reason for the discrepancy is simple, and it is this: the vast majority of gun owners are responsible people who go to great lengths to keep their guns properly stored and protect them from falling into the hands of criminals.

There certainly need to be certain restrictions on gun ownership, for example you don't want career criminals or insane people to have guns and you don't want households with really young children to have loaded guns just lying around. Proper systems of background checks take care of the first case, and reasonable trigger-safety-lock and liability laws cover the second.

The fact of the matter is, almost all law-abiding (good) gun owners would support laws requiring all gun owners to take safety classes and abide by safe handling and storage procedures, IF these laws were written in such a way that they (1) did not PREVENT law-abiding people from lawfully owning guns (by local anti-gun police or politicians holding up the permit process as if they were a dictator), (2) did not require unreasonable fees designed to tax gun-owners out of existence, and (3) had safeguards permanently included as part of the law so that the information collected as a result could NEVER be used to facilitate a nationwide confiscation of privately (and lawfully) owned guns.

The debate over gun ownership is a long and involved one, and to have any real hope of making any sense at all of it you need to carefully read the information presented by both sides. That is INFORMATION, not fear-mongering and scare tactics (which are employed routinely by both sides unfortunately). Check out every reported statistic to make sure it really is a real statistic and not something somebody just made up, and see what the other side has to say about the same statistic.

I personally love weapons (no I am not a psychopath) I am simply an enthusiast. Just like someone who loves cars. Anyways, there are plenty of reasons of to why I am FOR guns and here they are listed:

#1: If someone is breaking into your home, you don't know if they're armed or not. You don't know if they mean you harm or if they just want to take your stuff. Sure you can call the police but if these people mean you harm you may already be dead. It takes time for police to show up and if you have a gun in your home then you're much better off. You can protect you, your family and your stuff.

#2: If you're walking down the street and someone walks by and tries to mug you or they attempt to rape you, a gun is a lot more persuasive than telling them to stop.

#3: It's the 2nd Amendment! We have the right to bear arms for self defense, hunting, or to form a well regulated militia to fight against a corrupt government.

#4: MONEY! Some people make a living from manufacturing, selling, or trading guns. Some day I would like to obtain a Type 7 FFL (Federal Firearms License) with the SOT (Special Occupational Tax) which is a Manufacturer's license. It allows me to convert Semi-Auto guns to Fully-Auto and sell them to other people with an FFL or police/military. There's a lot of money to be made in selling firearms. (mostly used). Anyways, I wouldn't be too happy if I spent $500,000 to open a gun business only for people to vote away the right to bear arms because they think guns are "evil"!

#5: If everyone owned at least one firearm the crime rate would plummet! Who out of their right mind would want to break into a home full well knowing that they have a gun? Criminals target the people who, instead of having a gun, have a baseball bat next to their bed. Having those signs that say "THIS IS A GUN FREE ZONE!!" literally only makes you a target for criminals. Why? Because criminals don't care about the law but law abiding citizens do. You know what it kind of reminds me of? That commercial for a security system, when these people start robbing a bank and the lady on the floor looks at the security guy and is like "Do something!" and he's like "Oh, I'm not a security guard. I'm a security MONITOR. I only notify people if there's a robbery...... There's a robbery....."That's what a gun free zone is. Law abiding citizens are unarmed in such situations and criminals have no regard for the law.

#6: Target practice. Some people do it just for fun others do it competitively.

#7: I think I already mentioned this somewhere, but Hunting! A lot of people don't care to use airguns or bows while hunting they would much rather use a nice Remington 700 BDL.

Guns are VERY effective if they're used properly and for the right reason! Guns must be kept out of children's reach and in a safe place! Should there be some more background checks to make sure weapons aren't being given to certain felons or someone with a severe mental illness? YES! I am a law abiding citizen who has done nothing wrong and I'm not afraid to go through a background check. Someone who has a bad psychiatric disorder or something like Schizophrenia probably shouldn't have a gun or someone with a police record of multiple armed robberies. We the people have the right to bear arms!!!!! Does that answer your question lol? (:

The 2nd amendment gives a US citizen the right to keeo and bear arms. Increasing gun laws and increasing restrictions in guns doesn't make anyone safer because criminals tend not to follow laws. Just because a few people a year want to go rogue doesn't mean the rest of the population's gun rights should suffer. If someone wants a gun no matter the laws they can get one. If someone wants to hurt someone they will hurts them whether it be with their bare hands or a knife or a baseball bat. Take Mexico for example. The citizens aren't allowed possession of guns and look at the crime rate. This is because all of the criminals have the guns regardless of the law set in place.

A gun is an inadamite object that needs, as Sir Isaac Newton would say, an outside force to make it work, because an object at rest will remain at rest, until acted upon by an outside force.

There have been to many stories of people "that do what their told" and are killed. We have had mountain lion attacks in this state. I'm too old to fight off with an knife, let alone my barehands.

The last murder in this town was with a knife. My father was murdered with a car. The first recorded murder was with a rock. You can be killed with shoe laces, knives, scissors, rocks, cars, some kind of a blugeon, rope, hammer, screwdriver, and the list goes on and on.

A firearm gives a person a chance for survival. I wouldn't trust the non-lethal "options" for some basic reasons. Pepperspray has a possibility for blowback-making you more vulneralbe, then if the person's been peppersprayed before their more apt to be able to ignore the affects. If they are on drugs it will HAVE NO EFFECT on them. Tasers have killed a few people and I have seen a few people that need to be repeatedly shocked for ANY affect.

The person to blame is the thug. I criminal is a criminal. The recidivsim rate is too high. They are not being punished, my guess is they just don't care.

The Supreme Court has had several cases where they have declared that the police don't have to respond. In case of a natural disaster you are on your own.

Where I live the criminals assume your armed and they move along, we are more apt to be attacked by animals.

What you don't realize those of us who carry have training and train on a regular basis. Most of us also have first aid training and CPR. I know in this state it can take upwards of thirty minutes for a deputy to respond. It takes a person thirty seconds to bleed out if their neck is slashed.

If you want to be a victim go ahead, just let those of us who are law abiding citizens do what we need to do to protect our own and if your in danger and are lucky we'll have your back.

I am not against guns. Guns can provide great protection. Most countries where legal gun ownership is high, the violent crime rate is low.

Guns in the hands of criminals is a dangerous thing, but it is impossible to prevent them from obtaining guns, so a well armed civilian population helps keep this in check. Think about it would you attack someone if you thought that they were armed with a gun.

I am a collage student at the University of Utah (located in a free state), and gun ARE allowed on campus. Many of my friends carry concealed weapons to class with them every day, and firearms have been allowed on campus since the University was founded nearly 170 years ago. We even have a shooting range located on campus where the University pistol team trains, marksmanship classes are taught, and community groups hold weekly shooting competitions. There have been zero incidents involving firearms in the UofU's history, and I feel much safer at this school than I would in a state that has taken away it's citizens' fundamental rights. If we are ever unfortunate enough to have an active shooter incident on campus, such a rampage would likely be much shorter lived than at another school were students and faculty are not allowed to defend themselves.

I'm not against guns because I think that people who use them to hurt others would just find another way to commit their crime. If someone is determined to rob you and kill you if necessary to get what he/she wants, for example, and doesn't have access to a gun then they will just do it with a knife. It doesn't make the crime any less dangerous. You can just as easily die from a stabbing as you can from a gun shot wound.
