My son was about 16 months old (not average age) when he started taking his own diaper off. That was my first clue to start putting "big boy pants" on him. He couldn't stand to have on a wet diaper, so I just told him that he would have to potty in the bathroom like "big boys" do, within a couple of weeks, he was out of diapers during the day and within a month, he would even go to bed without one. My daughter is a completely different story, for another day! Good luck anyways!

Around 18 months is a pretty good age but I have friends of mine that started their kids 14 or 16 months. For some reason it is easier with girls. One of the ways I knew with my daughter was that she would say eeewwww when she did poopy in her diaper. She didn't like it I guess, go figure. That's when I started to show her the potty chair. Also whenever I would use the bathroom I would take her with and tell her that "big girls use the potty" and have her sit on her potty the same time I was sitting on mine. Eventually she started taking off her diaper when she did poopy and would run to her potty chair. Eventually she just caught on to the whole thing - she was fully potty trained way before 2 years old.

I start putting the potty put about 2-4 weeks before their 2nd birthday. I have potty trained 3 out of 4 of my boys in 1 month. My other son was a challenge as we moved out of state and had a new baby during that time so he quit using the potty for about 4 months and then went back to it and was potty trained in about 2 weeks. Many people try to potty train at a year old but I think it is too stressful on the child and can delay their wanting to use the potty. There are so many opinions out there just trust what you think your child is ready for- don't push too hard and if he/she isn't ready wait a few weeks and try again. Good Luck!

don't push them is the first rule - you can encourage (like asking if they want to try and when they show interest put them in a pair of underpants - but you have to be vigilant!!) but don't harp on it. they pick up on your stress if you are anxious about it and that does not help.

my littlest guy was about 18 months when he really became interested about it but even then they may not be completely trained for a couple of years - it just becomes part of your routine. he is now four and a half and since taking him out of overnighters (those pull-up nappy things) around the age of three he has had only one overnight incident.

every kid is different, just go with the flow on it (so to speak) and don't be surprised if "sitting" on the toilet is something they are afraid of. they may be good at one kind of toilet stop, and not so great with the other.

if you nag them into it you may get great results to start with but then down the track (like say five and six years of age) they may have a relapse and that can be very distressing for them (as well as you).

take no notice of anyone who brags about their kid being toilet trained a week after they were born or something stupid like that - yours might have a higher iq or win an olympic medal. hope this helps.

i started at 2 1/2. she would always stand still to pee ans squat to boo-boo. that told me she understood it was taking place. I think that's important that they understand and can say it. or your talking to a brick wall
