It isn't as important as it used to be. It used to be our only means of combating certain kinds of infections. Today it is just one of many antibiotics that are available, and many microorganisms have become resistant to penicillin.

Penicillin was the first naturally occurring "antibiotic" to be noticed. It was very important in the treatment of syphilis, which before penicillin was a deadly disease.
