I struggle with this myself. For behavior modification, I tend to do something that inflicts slight pain when I catch myself doing it. Bite my tongue, pinch myself, etc...

Immediately thereafter, I give myself a mental shout of NO. STOP. And follow that with something positive instead. (Instead of thinking I hate my life, I hate my life, etc... I change it around to something like: I'm unhappy right now, but I DO LIKE ______ & I DO want to live. I WILL be happier as I improve my own attitude.)

It's hard to explain, but do you see what I'm getting at?

I know you can do it & I'm sure you will if you really want to. I know because I'm doing it & I can see a big difference between now and just three months ago. If I can do it, then it's a sure bet than anyone can.

This is what my therapsit taught me that was very effective. It's called replacement techniques:

Any time a negative thought comes into your head, immediately "change the channel." If a TV channel came on you didn't like or made you feel down, you'd turn it. Your mind is the same way! As soon as a negative thought comes in, replace it with something positive. Think ahead of time for things to think of until you get used to it. For example, any time a negative thought arises, sing your favorite song. Or think about what you're going to make for dinner that night. Or think of a nice thing about yourself (you like your hair today, or you look good in your outfit, etc.). Soon you'll get used to it and you'll immediately dismiss anything negative.

I hope this helps.

Have you ever heard the saying, positive in - positive out or negative in- negative out. You need more postive going into your body. Try reading books that are positive (like some self help books on how to communicate or how to love those around you and such). If you read 15 minutes a day, it will really help. Also try saying at least one compliment to at least one person a day. This will really help you to be a more positive person.

Don't ever worry about things you can't control. Read "Don't Sweat the Small Stuff"
