I just got a call from my son's principal. He is in 1st grade and she said another parent complained today because her daughter claimed my son kissed her and used his tongue.

I am going to talk to him tonight about this. I am concerned to speak him in a way where he understands that he can't do that, and also so he doesn't feel badly or get a hang-up.

Any experience with this?

You may be right on the show. There is only one "adult" show we watch together sometimes and that is "Drake and Josh" ... Drake ends up kissing a few girls and it's in the opening credits. Sigh.

My son kissed a girl at school when he was younger. Both children wanted to but only my son got in trouble when the girls parent complained.

Here is what we did right, wrong or otherwise.

We sat our son down and told him...

"We understand that you may see older people kissing but at your age it is too young to show that kind of feelings outside of the family. It's not that it's wrong but you have to know better what could happen. The other person may not realise it but they could have a cold or something like that, that could be transmitted when kissing. Older people understand this better and you will learn over time when it is the right time to do things like this. For now just say your sorry to the girl and ask her to forgive you. And don't worry about it but also don't kiss people other than family until your older and understand this stuff better."

That seemed to work and blaming it on the possiblity of passing a simple cold was much easier to understand than other diseases and he stopped.

Best of Luck

I have lots of experience with this. I taught Kindegarten for years and I raised three kids of my own...one was a kisser.

What you tell your son is that we don't touch other people unless they say it's okay. Period. We don't push them, hug them or kiss them unless they say they want us to do that. You ask him to promise you he won't kiss anyone again in school. School is not a place for hugging and kissing.

If you make too much out of this, your child will be upset. He was probably doing something he saw somewhere. Does he watch adult TV? Keep an eye on that. 6 year olds don't understand french kissing, so downplay the kiss and talk more about touching as I mentioned above.

Again at a time when kids are so young it is hard to find the words to discuss touchy subjects. Talking to him is the best way. Try telling him that some girls do not like that and if he is trying to be friendly then MAYBE a hug or a handshake is fine. Be first to make sure that is the situation because anymore the smallest thing is turned upside down and it means nothing.

That is chancably behavior that is learned. Whether its from people or TV. When you have the talk with him, try not to make him feel like its dirty or wrong for him to do, but more of an activity that is for adults. Tell him that its normal but not for a 6 year old.

that kid is nasty! I tutor 1st grders and they are so little. I love drake and josh, and drake is a pretty violent kisser. Tell him not to do it and keep him away from the poor girl or he is going to ahve pregnant girls left and right if he is only 6

My best friends son tried to kiss my daughter. We sat the two of them down and simply said that it wasnt cool to do that. Grown ups that love each other can kiss like that.. kids can hug their friends but only if their friend says its okay first. Just break it down plain and simple. Dont act mad.. just lay down the facts. If he does it again though, a time out would be in order.

I think a 6 yr-old kissing a 6 yr-old girl is a normal thing. I mean he's just 6! what could be wrong. but the tongue thing....umm you might want to see how true that was...I doubt a six year old used his tongue to kiss someone. Maybe the parent is just exaggerating

My sister was kissed in 1st grade too.

Just explain to him that kissing like that isn't appropriate. Don't freak out, but just explain that now is not the time to be kissing the girls.

There's no need to PUNISH him or make a big deal out of it. Just take him aside and explain to him why it's wrong.

He is only 6 years old but, just ask him why he thought he could do that and then try to explain that he can't just go to a girl and kiss her in that way. If you and your husband kiss like that in front of him then he probably is just trying to be like you.
