As in Military? US?
The Uniform Code of Military Justice defines a deserter as someone absent from station for more than 45 (continuous) days.

If this person is a Deserter, the police will have a record and, upon apprehension, return him/her to the nearest military post for processing.

If they're merely on Unauthorized Absence, nobody cares. The Military won't take action.
