So, I have this dilemma. I want to go to a private college, but my parents do not want to pay for it; they want me to go to a community college. But, a community college education would not be good for the career path in which I am choosing. And my parents don't understand this concept. They just don't understand how important it is for me to get away from them and begin becoming an adult. How should I go about solving this dilemma.

Years ago I had the same dilema. The comprise was that my parents would pay the amount it would cost to send me to the community college and I would pay the rest.

You can get your associates at the community college and then go to the 4 year school to finish. That will be cheaper in the long run. Maybe do that and do really good and they'll see over the course of the two years that you have goals and are working hard to achieve those goals and hopefully they'll figure out that they can't hold you back. If they don't then you need to sit them down and have a serious talk.

I'm sure your parents have your best interest at heart but if you are dead set on attending a private college than I think you should accept the money that your parents were willing to pay for your community college and figure out (grants or such) how you are going to pay for the rest of it....I don't believe that is really is the parents responsibility to pay for kids to go to college...if your parents are gracious enough to pay for some of it you should except this and move on.....As far as your parents letting go....THEY NEVER WILL....I'm 40 yrs old....my parents are just as much in my life now than they every were....if a parent loves their child they stay involved forever!!!.....good luck !!

For the first two years of college, you usually cover just the basic courses. It would not hurt to attend the local college for these courses and this will give you time to establish your young adult identity. When your parents see that you are responsible in doing your classwork and holding a job, if you have one, then they will be more willing to let you go.

Private colleges are 4 times more expensive. Maybe you can get an associates degree, then transfer to your private college.
