I do not think torture should be allowed to find out IF someone knows something.
i do, however, believe that if certain people are known to be connected to certain groups (terrorist), then torture should be used to extract information from them.
Does anyone not think that torture should be used on someone who is knowingly trying to destroy civilian life, in order to save those lives?

Let me put it this way. There are only a handful of countries who ACTUALLY abide but the Geneva Convention about torture. Of those handful, we aren't at "war" with them. So, why do we ALWAYS have to take the high road when no one else does. Just because laws are passed to prevent it, it's not going to stop our soldiers from being tortured for who they are, so why not fight fire with fire and actually use it to gain information about matters that could SAVE lives.

Torture is wrong.
The question should be. Is it time to rewrite the constitution. If you are tired of America having a somewhat moral high-ground then go ahead torture. It is a wonderful place to start.
Let me suggest 2 things First try it on someone to get a feel for how you like it. Then make a list of all known cases where torturing anyone provided the information to save thousands of innocent lives. My guess would be there is none in history. A few cases of military actions being stopped. Or positions revealed. But men in combat do not know what generals are planning.
Now before you go to far. Remember God said woe into them that say let us do evil that good may come.

Torture is a brutal, inhuman and ultimately useless act. It turns the torturer into a monster. We're supposed to be the good guys. The good guys don't torture people. The terrorists do that. See, that's why they're the terrorists.
It's also stupid. If you torture anyone long enough and hard enough, they will either die, or say anything you want them to say. Look at all the people the Inquisition tortured into admitting all sorts of untrue things, just to get the torture to stop.
If you decide that you are going to do the same things that the terrorists do, then you are no better than they are. If someone knows something that's so important that we are willing to act against our principles and strip them of their basic humanity, then don't lower yourself to brutality, just drug them. It's not torture, and it's at least as effective.

IMO, torture is an extremely unreliable way to get information. Most of the time the people being tortured will give the torturers what they want, just so the pain will stop.

The law is very simple. If someone is tortured, you cannot prosecute them. So, the authorities get to trade off the issues.
If you need to torture them to get information, that gives them a walk on anything related to the information obtained via torture. So, it becomes a question of how much you think the info is worth.
