the poles are grounded, negating any current to be shorted in thier bodies - no elecrocution

Because in order to be electrocuted, a bird would have to complete an electrical circuit - the overhead lines you mention make a circuit by connecting, through the railway car, to the rails below. Birds can't do that, and thus can safely sit on the wires.

Because they are only touching one wire, with their feet. Therefore they are not grounded. This is why taller birds don't land on wires...their heads would touch the upper wire, and complete a circuit. And it would be roasted bird for dinner!

Some are .. but most land on one wire .. I think it is a combination of two wires .. in order to be electrocuted. There are quite a few squirrels who are though. Good Luck ! :)
