I really want to volunteer in anything involving to help out the oceans. I'm talking about anything from the water, to plants, to animals, and so on. The thing is, I don't know any places around my area (East Bay Area, around San Francisco, CA) that are participating in anything like this. The closest one I know is in Monterey Bay, and that has to be at least 3-4 hours away of driving from where I live.

Does anyone out there know any programs like these that are in need of volunteers? I'd really love to get involved, and by involved, I mean I don't mind putting on some scuba gear and untangling some nets in the ocean. I know that example is probably too far from my reach seeing as I'm not a professional scubadiver, but if I was asked to, I will volunteer to do that.

Anybody have any information? Again, I live in the East Bay Area, which is about an hour away, north-east of San Francisco.

If you're willing to spend a semester at sea, try http://www.semesteratsea.com/ .

Since you live near San Fran, search around and ask about internships. Sometimes it's more of an insurence burden to allow volunteers to go into the water--go for the internship. Also, having volunteers be around wild animals get again be a hazard to the program. One person who doesn't know anything gets bitten and the whole volunteer thing is gone.

Hi - There a lot of groups wanting volunteers - Sierra club, ecology groups, teaching labs, aquariums, Go on l;ine and plug in "Volunteer" and the area you are interested in - you should get a lot of answers. The thing about volunteering though, sometimes you have to pay to participate. Good Luck

Look for environmental non-profits in your local area. They can always use volunteers and make sure to tell them exactly what you are interested in doing and any special talents you may have.

this may not be as far as you want to take it but you could join the navy seals, or coast guard. im sure you could do alittle bit of everything there. other than that, you could take neils advice and start something yourself and get people to join you... be a leader.
