When I removed the lens from the camera and adjusted the aperature, I noticed that the blades didn't move. Do they only move when the lens is attached to the camera and fall back to a default size when the lens is removed, or is my lens broken?

No it is nt broken. The AE1 sets the apperture when you click the picture.

Yep. If you want to see the aperture blades close down, look for the little latch on the lens mount.

What you describe is normal for Canon FD series lenses. Nothing to worry about.
