My son is turning 3 next week and just in the last 3-4 months have we been able to understand most of what he says. Some is still gibberish, but we just fake our way through it! If you're really worried, talk to your doctor about it. Different kids develop at different rates.

My son just turned three, and since he was about 1 and a 1/2 he'd talk none stop, 99% of which we never understood. But he's now 3 and he's able to say 4-5 word sentances pretty clearly, sometime he gets a little flustered and will start talking gibberish again but he's getting very good. So all children start at different ages.

Yeah all kids are different. Just this June my granddaughter Sweetbaby talked all gibberish, we thought she would never get a word in, then all of a sudden in August she started having conversations with us. Its like she's been saving all these words just to say to us. Everyday its amazing just to hear her talk. Then again the sweet thing will not shut up, she talks ALL DAY LONG. So get ready, he'll be talking your ears off soon.

It is different for different kids. My oldest grandson was speaking clear sentences at 11 months but his younger brother is now 16 months and he can barely say understandable words.

Try not to get frustrated - just talk to him alot and clearly. Repeat what he is trying to back to him so he can hear it said correctly such as, "Do you want a cup of juice - okay, I'll get you a cup of juice?" No babytalk. Children are mimics. But most of all they are individuals and mature at different stages. BE PATIENT - he'll get it. You can also make a game out of certain words by making song out of it such as, "Juice, juice, juice, I'm going to get _____ juice to drink because I love him so." You get the idea.

Caution - if you get frustrated he may say things incorrectly just to push your buttons.

It's very frustrating not being able to understand your little one. My daughter is 8 now & I remember people thinking that she was much older when she was 2 because she spoke & communicated very well. When she would say "ahwhanchuse"
I would put her on my hip & tell her to "show mommy" what she wanted. She would eventually lead me to the fridge & point. Once I realized what she was trying to say I simply pointed to my lips and told her to "watch mommy" and I enunciated each syllable & she'd watch my lips & then I'd tell her to repeat it. She not only learned very early on how to speak clearly & communicate but she learned how to read lips. Don't be worried until you have tried to break it all down for him. Once you realize what he is asking for or trying to say, repeat it to him so that he can pick up on how you understand him. I also found at that age not to really baby talk w/my daughter, I just simply talked to her and she picked up on it.

I wouldn't worry. Kids usually really start talking and able to communicate around the age of two. Plus sometimes kids don't always slow down to talk so it gets muffled.

Boys mature slowly. I had a nephew like this and they took him to all these doctors, speech therapists etc. Nobody could find out anything. It just happens sometime but he came around eventually. Good luck and don't worry he'll do it when he's ready.

My kids were fluently gabbing by a year and a half. I wanted someone to talk to! My grandkids are three and four years old...The three year old we had to send to speech classes on the bus and he finally is getting the idea to say something! The four year old started at around two and a half and now...he is a sassy witty child. I laugh hard at what he says...Give it time and tell him to slow down talking to you. Does he get around other kids who talk?
