A family doctor is someone who looks after people at all ages of life and is generally skilled in looking after people who are "healthy" or who have relatively uncomplicated issues.

An Internal Medicine doctor specializes in the medicine "of the internal organs." In practice they tend to be more involved with adults (not children) with more complex problems and multiple problems. Internists are adept at figuring out diagnostic challenges - where a general or family doctor is having trouble determining what is going on. On the other hand, internists don't know as much about - say - looking after an uncomplicated pregnancy, family counselling and general pediatrics - as a family doctor might
