For some reason little dogs do seem to bark like crazy. Maybe it's small dog syndrome. He wants everyone to think he is a badass! But seriously...get an old coffee can and put 6 or so pennies in the can. Whenever he barks, shake it at him and he'll hate that noise. If you keep doing that he'll learn that if he doesn't stop barking he'll have to hear that stupid noise and he won't bark!

Smaller animals, such as small dogs or even pigeons, have increased heart rates. Their heart beats faster than a larger dog, so it's kind of like they are always on a sugar rush. However they do not feel like they are moving fast or barking a lot, because their body is accustomed to operating and functioning at a rapid pace. Your dog doesn't realize its barking so much, so make sure you don't yell at it. Also, because it is a smaller dog, it can feel intimidated by most everything that is taller than it. However they don't get scared, they get tough. What you need to do to make your dog more comfortable, is to bend down to their eye level as often as you can. Or, like most small dog owners, you can try to carry it as often as possible. This makes their eyeline more even to everything especially you, thus making them feel safer and less intimidated. It also makes them feel a lot closer to you.

I have read that Yorkies are very protective dogs and they are rated high as a "watch dog"...although they seem to be too small to do anything but bark :)

Yorkies don't realize they are small. They think they are the biggest badest dog around. Bless their little hearts. They also are hyper by nature. I do think it has something to do with their blood sugar level. They are stubborn, loud and adorable. My Yorkie thinks he is all there is and the world revolves around him. I must say he is right too. lol Sometimes Yorkes are so cute they don't get disciplined as needed. Guilty as charged. They can be trained to be very well behaved.
