My niece is 6yrs old and weights 80lbs, but she's about 4'9. Her dad is a big guy!! And after my cousin had her she plumped up as well. But so do all the women in my family.
Growing up none of us were on the hefty side. And with childhood obesity on the rise, should I say something to my cousin about her daughters weight? Or should I just let my cousin deal with it her way? Please help!!

I suggest you gently ask your cousin what she thinks about so-and-so's weight, "is she getting a little heavy?" If your cousin feigns ingorance, like "what are you talking about", quickly drop the subject. If she's not concerned, then you'll just be prying. If she is concerned, then talking about it with you may be helpful.

wow! I have an 11 yr old who weighs 69 lbs and 70 with shoes. He is a little guy but he also has alot of health challenges. He doesn't let it stop him from participating in activities.
If your niece is healthy then that could be why your cousin isn't too concerned about her. She may take after her dad's side of the family. The best rule of thumb is to see what the pediatrician has to say.

I had a cousin who was very large throughout her childhood while the rest of us were petit, danced hula etc...
When she turned 16 she lost all of her weight and was so beautiful in the transformation.

Your cousin is already aware of her daughter's size. Since she is also tall for her age, don't judge her simple by how much she weighs. Also, is she physically active? Perhaps you could invite your cousin AND her daughter to join you for a walk or bike ride. Try to lead by example - it is good that you are concerned but you will be no help to the child if you make her mother mad enough to limit contact.

Depends on how defensive the parents are. They may be offended by you suggesting that they're not being good parents by having an obese 6 year old.

Besides, I don't think you'd have all that much influence one way or another - people will do what they do.

I wouldn't say anything. Actually, if she is only 4'9", her weight is a little under the normal range. Her weight should be between 92 and 115 pounds.

You can adress the issue but i'm sure its obvious that she's overweight. I don't believe your sister will do anything about it. My sister is fat shes 9 and weighs more then me (shes like 110-115)! I told my mom she should do something about it she said she would (big lie). But hey i don't really care i'm not the fat one lol so i don't let it bother me. Even her doctor says she'd overweight... Maybe its just my mom nothing gets through to her. Anyway good luck with your sister and niece.

Yes, as a concerned cousin I think you should. Suggest that it's not healthy and you don't want to see her daughter this way because it may or may not get worse and her daughter can hate her for it one day if she doesn't control it now.
