How do you get students to read?

Whats the best and worst way to get students to read?

Are you a well liked teacher? I remember one teacher that everyone seemed to like so this worked for him. First he worked with the librarian for his class to come to the library for the day. And she went over how the library works, even though they already had been through this. {just as a refresher}. On the next Monday, it was library day, you went in checked out a book, any book. Read it that week, and on Thurs., was report day. You had to have the basics written down for the teacher, but for the class, you could give an oral report on the book, sing a song, do a skit, what ever it took, but you had to make sure the class know what that book was about. The prize was for the top 4 reports (2 girls & 2 boys) went to the teacher's house Friday night for dinner & a movie, with him and his wife. It worked all year.

If you just tell them to read they will think oh great another reading assignment. If they have a game on the reading material afterwards, or an incentive to write a report on the reading passage it helps.

give them a reading log to fill out every time they read at home. ask a parent to sign it saying they actually read that amount of time or number of pages. when students reach a certain amount of time or a certain number of pages offer small prizes (pencils, erasers, pencil grips, etc.)

talk to their parents give them detention and if they dont read say screw it give thema bad grade and when their grade slowly start to go down they'll read TRUST ME
