Yes. The trick is in doing it so casually that it never becomes a big deal or makes me look like a relic of the past.

The custom started in days when streets were not paved and were occupied by horses--to keep the ladies long skirts from being soiled or splashed by mud. It is proper for the man to walk on whatever side protects her---depending on the situation. He always puts himself between her and potential harm. That usually means on the outside(or street side).

While it is not widely practiced as it used to be, it is still appreciated. ;-) I teach my son to do the same as I teach him to also open the door and let me go first.
The actual history behind why it was done is this... Before sewer systems were in place like they are today, people would throw what was in their chamber pots out the window and onto the street. The man would stand on the side closest to the street in order to shield the woman from having this dumped on her head. It also kept her out of harms way from the mud that would be splashed from the street by the horses and horse-drawn carriages.
Ahh...chivalry!

The man should always walk on the side near the road. That way,if a car mounts the pavement,he gets it first. True !

yes most definately
the origin stemming from the correct belief that women are more precious than men in terms of reproduction. men can make hundreds of babies in a year. a woman can only have one pregnancy per year. this means that a man is therefore more dispensable than a woman. if a car were to swerve and knock someone over, better that it is the man. its the survival instinct.
oh and its quite romantic too...

Yes, although proper etiquette is not popular any longer. I always appreciate it though.
