Very nice question.
This comes down to fear. Ppl who make fun of others are insecure because they have not found their own passion or purpose, and that creates fear. So, in order to minimize or mask that fear, ppl often try to minimize others-- it creates a perverted sense of equality.
The only cure to that is that these ppl find what they are passionate about and get to it. Unfortunately, our society is set up in such a way that many children are raised to believe the things they are naturally inclined toward are wrong, or not going to sustain them financially. The world grieves many artists who become accounts, in example, because they were taught to focus on more traditional ways of making a living. A lot of times, these ppl are bitter and empty, and can't reconcile what they want with what they're "supposed to" want, and are oftentimes lost, and find it easier to make fun of those who did not give up on their dreams, then to challenge their own selves and figure out their own desires. It starts early, this conditionally-- and I think that's what you saw with the older boys riding in their bikes and making fun of the 5-6 year olds... it appears the older we get, the more restricted we are by society.

I've always thought of it as an inability to understand and except that other people have different likes and intrests. People have a tendency to mock or fear things that they aren't a part of.
As for the kids making fun of the karate students, here's what I think: When people are with a group of other adults/kids that don't partake in an activity or belief as another group, it gives them something to talk about to speak badly about the outsiders. It assures that they are on the same wave lenghts as their friends. In a way it mimics the pack mentality of animals.
Oddly enough I think it's just an unfortunate part of human behavior. I think everyone has been guilty of mocking someone else's "passion" at some point or another. Who hasn't teased a friend or family member for liking something that you don't?
Hopefully those young karate students didn't take to heart those idiots making fun of them.

I agree, it's a little jealousy that they don't have a dream or passion of their own, and they want to feel superior at all costs.
Sad.
You have brought a wonderful topic to Yahoo Answers (in the midst of all the trash), thanks for the food for thought.

I think some people are jealous when others have the courage to pursue their passions. They are envious because they themselves are too insecure to do the same, so they lash out in anger.

I usually do my due diligence to answser most questions that come to me about spiritual things according to the Bible.
However, In this case, I'm strictly going to give my own personal opinion. As far as I know I have little or no biblical backing for what I'm about to say. It's just what I think.
Some people don't believe the devil exists. I'm not one of those people. That said, I know for a fact that he hates God with a passion because he couldn't overthrow him in his one and only chance at an attempt, and he knows he never will. Some people don't believe that God exists. I'm not one of those people either. As a matter of fact, my one goal in life is unbroken fellowship (aka, hanging out) with God. When you hang out with someone a lot, you get to know some things about that one. That said, in my experience hanging out with God, I know Him to be the most passionate being I have ever encountered. I'm a passionate person, so it's not difficult for me to recognize passion.
Now, back to what I said about the devil hating God. When God created man, God created him in His own image, after His own likeness (Genesis 1:26, 27) - including the attribute of passion. When Adam disobeyed God's one and only command not to eat of the tree of good and evil, Adam and all his offspring and the generations that would follow came under the influence of the devil's realm. So, people who are not born again were born under that influence and remain under that influence until Christ comes and makes them a new creature.
Even then, the devil is at work trying to shut down passion - especially in Christians because if Christians allow that Godly passion to come alive, the devil's in trouble. He doesn't get to do as much destructive stuff in the world as he would like.
The sad reality is, most people don't even realize it is an influence of the devil to hate passion in people because that passion is still a reflection of God's original intent for man - which is to be conformed to His own image created after His own likeness.

I think when we encounter a behavior we don't understand, we either get curious, get scared, or get giggly.
Kids can be cruel, and then again, so can adults.
