This is a question that only an individual can answer for him- or herself, I believe.
My answer is: I don't need religion. I need God's Son to cleanse me of sin, guide my life, and open my spirit to insight, love, mercy, and truth.
Why do I need this? Because in my life I had reached the end of my own limited resources, and found that what I was seeking was not inside of me. When thus convinced of the uselessness of my life operated on my own power, I went to God and offered him my life to do with as he saw fit. He transformed my life, and continues to guide me, granting me--as it suits his good purposes--things of beauty that I never could have provided for myself, nor could I get them from other people.
It is my belief that we are prone to fail without returning our lives to he who created us and who knows what we need. I believe this based on firsthand experience--of living apart from God, and then returning to God. It is an experience that I recommend, as it is the only thing on earth that is of value.

Some people think that we needed religion to help our civilisation to evolve. The theory is that people were living in groups of relatives or a clan structure and that knowledge of close relationship was the bond that allowed people to trust each other. however as groups tried to form societies out of different clans another form of "social glue" was needed and it is thought that by agreeing on a religious belief that made people able to co-exist as they had a common belief and a shared hierarchy of priests. The religious seems to be the most common form of social glue for political , and a king susbervient to our common god. Entities as large as a city-state or even a coalition such as the way Israel and Judah came together as jews after the northern states destruction, but as the political entity grows the next stage is nationalism. Hopefully it wont be long till we get to the state where it is only humanity that we need to have in common with our fellows!

Even though human beings do have intelligence, sometimes they cannot differentiate right from wrong.
Religion is a guide for human beings to live their lives according to God's rules. Good example would be people here (in this forum) who do not have religion, take a look how they behave and talk and you will understand why we need religion.
It's important to choose the right religion - the revealed religion (by God) and not manmade one. Go for Islam!

Religion means community. We need one another. Use the parable of embers as an example. Pull an ember out of a fire and it begins to go out. Put the ember back in and it gives off beautiful fire, heat and light.
Most folks confuse faith and religion. A person can be very religious but have no faith. Sad but true.
Faith supports us. Helps us be better people.

for some people it serves as a sense of hope, or a reason to live. to take fear away from dying and to make the passing of loved ones easier. some people are brainwashed it and dont know better, while others have an open mind and research and ask questions about religion. and others dont need it.

We don't need it--many live without it--but there are those who find comfort in believing in gods and supernatural forces that control the universe and keep it orderly, rewarding people for their goodness and punishing them for wickedness. It makes them feel good to be obedient to a creator-spirit and thankful for all the good things in life, which they regard as gifts. They find inspiration for how to live their lives in the stories of ancient people.

We dont "need" religion per say but if you can find one that helps you get closer to God with others that can help guide you to stay strong for God and into God then why not. But to "need' is not necessary. All we need is God.
