I know the Navy used to have lab techs, but I am not sure now. The Lab techs I knew when I was in were very well trained. I was a Corpsman and looking back, I will tell anyone it was an amazing time because of the training I received, however I will alwauys suggest that you go to a C school and so you can get job on the outside.

They still have lab technicians in the Navy. They don't have basic lab school anymore. They only have Advance Lab Tech School which is going to be in Fort Sam Houston, San Antonio, Texas. You must go to the Corpschool first, either go straight to FMSS or go after your "C" school. Most of the advance "C" schools in the Corpsman rating are required to go to FMSS (Field Medical Service School) before you start any school. Go talk to your recruiter to get the HM rating and try to get the advance lab school while in bootcamp or corpschool.

I don't know about the navy, but the army has a division called the USMRIID ( United States Medical Research Institute for Infectious diseases. They are featured in an awesome book called The Hot Zone by Richard Preston.

the enlisted rating is HM(Hospital Corpsman). the individiuual NECs(naval Enlistment code) is what defines a Dental tech from aphlebotomost from a physical therapist.
You would attend Boot camp, then A school(both inGreat lakes). After that, if you are male, expect to be sent to FMSS(Field Medical Service School) and be sent Greenside to work with Marines. If you are female, your choices are muchmore limited..and they take less women overall into HM.
You can only guarentee HM, you cannot be guarenteed any of the subspecialty schools.

The only thing u can be guaranteed is Hospital Corpsman.... any speciality training after that depends on your assignment after HN school.
Corpsman is currently a very competitive rating... lots of junior personnel trying for only a few senior advancement positions...
Talk to your recruiter and get any promises in writing!!!

Do you have college credits? I would try to go into the Officers Program. If you have already been to college, or if you are thinking of going to college...join the Navy under the Officers program. If you have questions about anything pertaining to a Military branch, its best to seek out a recruiter. They will answer all your question. Just because you ask them questions doesn't mean your obligated to join. Its best to ask someone who is trained to answer questions like that.

from what we have found when my son was looking into this area with all the branches it is the HARDEST section to get into with the fields either totally closed or not open until some time in the future.
Best thing is to go to recruiter and see what the status is for his area..............same navy but different areas have different quotas to fill.
Good Luck
