We had to go to the Register of Deeds. The licence was $50. Then when you are ready to marry (expires in 60 days) if you're going to be married by a preacher he needs to turn the papers in within 10 days or if you can go to the magistrate for a fee of $20. Then you still have to pay for the copy of your marriage certificate for $10.
Oh yeah (if your are under 21 you need your birth certificate) and your social security card as well as your driver's licence.
This is for NC. I'm not sure where you're located, I'm sure the only thing that varies are the fees though.

In Stearns County MN it costs $100 for a marriage license and you have to wait 5 days to get married. It is only good for 6 months and no refunds are given if you dont use it in time. If you go to a premarital class, they discount it to $30, but more often than not the class you have to take is more expensive than that unless you go through your local church.
You will need an ID, and if one of you were married before you have to bring the divorce papers. You have to know both parties Social Security Numbers. Both Parties do NOT have to be there to sign up for a marriage license.
It really just depends on where you live, and the rules there. I say call the courthouse and ask to speak to someone about obtaining a marriage license.

We just received our license about 2 weeks ago from the Jackson County court house (Missouri).
1) You walk in to a specic location for marriage licenses.
2) You don't fill out anything. You give them your driver's license, tell them your social security #, and your address. You sign a printed copy, and you also sign a paper that says you are not cousins (if illegal in your state).
3) It will cost between $50-$100. You will have to get more copies if you/your fiancee want to change your name. Some last for 30 days and others last for 6 months. Some have a waiting period, and some don't.
Call the court house of the county you will be MARRIED in.

You do have to go to city hall and fill out papers and pay about $130 (I think...sorry it has been a while...look on the Internet) and it won't take long and the marriage license is good for 3 months, I think.

In Colorado a marriage license is $10. You need to fill out an application also, but not charge here. Then for the judge to marry you is $40. So a total of $50 here. Don't listen to some of the stupid comments here. People can be so mean.

You and your partner need your birth certificates, drivers license or some form ID to prove where you live and where you were born, you give them $41.00 and wait 72hours and they will issue you the marriage certificate, which is good for 30 days. You can get married in Louisiana on the spot by signing a weaver to wave the three day waiting period.

They have this new invention I think it might be called the telephone. See how it works is that you pick it up put in the number to the city hall and then when they pick up you say how much is a marriage license and you know what they will actually tell you how much it is.

We have no idea, go down to City Hall and ask them. Usually you get a license from the County Clerk, but City Hall can direct you if you need to go somewhere else.
