Why does this argument make sense to some people? It seems completely illogical to me. How can someone say for example that Christianity is older than Islam and therefore true...don't they consider Judaism or even the Ancient Egyptian Gods?

It puzzles me, too. If that were the case then Druids or something like that would be the true religion. Maybe those who built Stonehenge?
Age doesn't necessarily denote truth.
BTW, I've not heard anyone of my faith (Christian) say anything like that, but I +have+ heard some non-Christian folks say it.

As a religious Jew, who could use the argument that Judaism is older than Christianty and Islam, I would actually agree with you that it is a very poor argument.
Interestingly enough, I once read a statement by a Muslim who argued the opposite: That Islam was true because it was younger than both Judaism and Christianity.
Suffice it to say that that argument makes even less sense.

The olny thing I will say though is that since Judaism is the older religion, both Christianty and Islam are therefore derivitive, thoufh fundamentally different.

I totally agree with you - time doesnt necessarily make something more true.
Time's function is to test a religion for beliveability (-if thats an actual word!). If a religion has lasted a long time then it seemingly has been put through more people's judgement of if it provides valid answers to important questions.

Therefore you could say it's tried and tested and therefore more true.

I dont think that this takes into account when religion is imposed on people without their own judgement.

actualy im with you the oldest religion known is Paganism.. the egyptian and grecian Gods that were worshiped... but Christianity try to tell people that they have the corner on the old market.. I dont buy it.. even Christianity has been so bastardized for so long that it has been splintered and splintered down to so many different sects that even if you ask 10 different Christians what their core beliefs are you will get 10 different answers... heck ask 10 different Baptist what they believe and you will get 10 diffent answers.. so I myself .. believe what has been passed down from generation to generation in my family all the way back to Grece and Egypt and that is the Pagan religion where I appreciate what has been given to us by the God and Goddess.
anyway, Blessings to all,

Who's to say that any religion is 100% uninfluenced by the people? No matter how old a belief is, things will always get lost in the translation. Although I hold my own religion, I believe that all of them have an equal shot at being true.

I think you're right. Religions were still instigated by people, so why does the fact that a person from the past practiced it make it any wiser than someone today?

If it's that many, many people through the years have believed, many, many people also thought that the earth was the center of the universe. Or that the world was flat. That doesn't necessarily make it so.

It is an indefensible argument and therefore should cause puzzlement.

Because some people make bad arguments does not by extension implicitly prove that what they are saying is false, however. Keep this in mind as you proceed in life. Some are better equipped in sound rhetoric than others. All this means is that some are better equipped in sound rhetoric than others.

Age has nothing to do with right or wrong when discussing religion. I have not personally heard much of that argument to defend or deny a religion (of course I am only 50, so have not heard everything yet)....

I cannot believe that Christians actually make that argument!? If they do, they are suggesting that their own beliefs are wrong since their own religion is just a derivative of Judaism.

If that was true, then we should all believe in Ishtar or one of the other Babylonian goddesses.

And Judaism is much older than Christianity, by at least 1000 years; so is Buddhism.

So I concur, it is a strange argument.
