The reason why people feel this way is because so many people get angry when a policeman pulls them over for speeding, or for whatever reason they are involved with the police. Let's face it, these people are breaking the law and being mad at the police is just stupid. Secondly, the media and TV portray police as if they are lazy and corrupt.
The truth is that while firemen are heroes in their own right, policeman are heroes as well. A fireman might face danger once or twice a month in an average city, yes, a lot more in bigger municipalities, but on average, they really don't answer a lot of dangerous fires.
Policemen however risk their life every time they make a traffic stop. This traffic stop may be the one where they have stopped someone who absolutely hates police and decides to shoot the officer. People out there would rather shoot an officer than pay a fine and have a speeding ticket on their record. Or, the traffic stop may be a person that is hiding from the police for whatever reason. Every domestic violence situation that a police officer walks into is a risk. In this situation you know that you have at least one person who is angry and violent and in the mood to fight. And, we can't forget the bank robberies in progress, the convenience store robberies in progress or the many other calls that police answer every time they are on duty. Every person they come into contact with has the potential to be carrying a weapon and every person has the potential to be someone who wants to and will use that weapon against them.
Those of you who think the police aren't heroes predominantly give reasons that show you have been in trouble with the police. My answer to that is.......stop committing crimes! Those of you who base your answers on the media hype .....well, you will be the first ones to call 911 and want a policeman to save you!
My husband is a police officer and my hero. Do me and my family a great favor, if you think so low of law enforcement, don't call for help next time someone's dog is barking too loudly, or the phone rings and no one is there, and, if you call for police help in a real emergency, remember that the policeman that just showed up to help you did so at a risk to his own life in an effort to keep yours safe.

I personally think both of them should be considered hero's. But I think people look at fireman as more of a hero because they see the fire and see the fireman go into the building and save people. When you see the police at a shootout it looks like a TV show, so they know its serious but it doesn't have the same effect..

Mainly, because of the stereotype of being a law enforcement officer is constantly reiterated than it is not. Stereotypes of cops taking bribes, eating doughnuts, harassing the unfortunate... You rarely hear about the rapist that was caught, or the crack house that was hit and shut down on the news. You mainly are exposed to the not-so-smart officers who make bad decisions, but they are only human. Without law enforcement, people would not have direction or a line between good and bad...speeding, etc. To catch a murderer or rapist doesn't happen overnight...it might happen when that one guy is speeding in a 35 gets pulled over and the cop finds a gun or some evidence linking him to a crime, but no...people get angry when they get pulled over, thinking it is a form of harrassment.
Firemen are required to be physically fit, to fight fires...but mainly they are the first responders to medical calls and are EMT's. There are more heartattacks than fires in any community. Firemen just sit and wait for the call...where as law enforcement officers are and should be proactive.
I believe both are heroes in their own right.

People tend to think that because of television. TV is everywhere nowadays, and movies are going down the hill. Think of all those movies where they showcase cops as lazy donut-eaters or fast-fooders. Or think of all the movies where the good guy is hunted by the cops (whether under a misunderstanding or not doesnt matter) thus immediately making the cop the bad guy.
TV imprints that opinion onto peoples' subconscious, along with a load of other false impressions, which is why a lot of people look at cops the way they do. I've never come across a movie that poses the firefighter as a bad guy.
Thus why I don't like television. I hope this has answered your question. :)

Don't know. Cops are my heros for the most part. I have a family full of them! If you really stop and think though, anyone who works hard to do a good job can be a hero. Construction workers, teachers, nurses, ... They might not risk their lives but they can help you get through life a little better.

the two could be seen as heroes and not as heroes, the two can do sturdy or undesirable, and the two could make ordinary blunders interior the line of accountability. professional firefighters and policemen are paid for his or her centers, and that's a factor of an incentive to do it, even though it takes a definite individual from the start to consciously make the alternative to contain themselves in a shootout or run right into a burning construction. They carry out a necessary place to communities and cities that ought to be crammed. it would be suitable for you, in this sense, to comprise militia workers on your question to boot. additionally they acquire training and are paid, and on an identical time as I understand there's a distinction there is maximum actually nonetheless an inherit experience of probability on the subject count of all 3 fields. On an element notice, on an identical time as i'm effective there may well be comparable roles for cops, their are additionally volunteer hearth departments whose participants acquire no repayment for what they do, different than the occasional thank you.

1) Because fireman only save lives, their whole raison d'etre is to save property and lives at their own personal risk. Police have a whole raft of duties, some are seen as being nit-picking and no one likes getting a crappy ticket for driving slower than the cop.
2) Firemen dont have to enforce stupid, unjust or hypocritical laws such as pot prohibition. They also dont have to shoot 8 yo children who happened to be carrying a toy gun when the cops burst in.
3)Firemen dont tend to be corrupt or to have power which they abuse to help friends and family members.
it is an unfortunate truth but by the time most people get to 25 yo they have either dealt with police corruption or they know someone who has- it's true! everyone has a story.,

probably because in the past, some police divisions have been found corrupt, taking bribes, etc.... therefore people may not look at an officer as a hero, also too, firemen dont arrest you for commiting a crime....but I think that honest police officers and firemen are both heroic and should be commended for the work they do. Lord knows we need them

I think it comes down to two main things: First, firefighting appears a more consistantly risky job. Certainly, every traffic stop, etc that a cop goes to could go sour, but many people consider fires to be more dangerous.
Secondly, cops don't just catch purse snatchers - they bust you when you're speeding, etc. That can create some hard feelings, especially compared to folks who rescue cats from trees and pull kids from burning buildings.
Neither is particularly fair, mind you, but a lot of folks hold that sort of attitude.
